2018 Starting Lineup--25 Man Roster

PreviousPage 5 of 11Next

It is looking as Asuaje is winning the 2B battle over Spangenberg this spring plus apparently not a lot of support for keeping them both on the 25 man ... so Spangenberg to AAA is possible (could sit at 3B to be working towards post-Headley). Have to have some worry about demoting a veteran such as Spangenberg to AAA and how he handles it ... would it be better to move him if a decent offer emerges?

In both 2017 and in ST, Asuaje has had better OBP, hit LHP better, and is described as the better defensive option at 2B which is a big plus with ground ball pitchers such as Richard and Perdomo. Spangenberg offers better speed and power although in ST Asuaje is showing some decent gap power.

Asuaje (26) with 6 years control and at league minimum salary. Spangenberg (27) with only 3 years control and $1.7MM salary. Advantage Asuaje. Spangenberg has some versatility (2B/3B/OF) while every indiction is that Asuaje is a 2B only. Advantage Spangenberg.

Just looking at 2018 ... Asuaje has won the slot BUT his lack of versatility may be an issue in 2019 when the presumptive 2B of the future ... Urias ... is up while 3B becomes open with the departure of Headley. IF Asuaje performs well in 2018 ... would the Padres consider moving Urias to SS or 3B (both could be "open" in 2019) ... if not would the projected emergence of Urias (and Tatis) effect the Asuaje / Spangenberg decision in 2018?

Not having Spangy on this roster would be a huge mistake in my opinion....he brings so many different skill sets to the table

1) He is a original draftee ( People would like to see our own drafted players stick and be a part of something that is only getting better ) and is a professional hitter and that matters ( Left Handed hitter that can use the whole field )

2) He can play multiple positions in the Infield ( 3B - 2B and even SS in a pinch )...not to mention the outfield if needed

3) He has wheels and that is the one thing that you really can't teach...unless you run track

4) He also has some pop in his bat because he has such a sweet, short fast swing...has very good plate discipline

5) Great ambassador for the game of baseball in the community

He and Asuaje are both gamers and are BOTH keepers....good managers find a way to keep good players and get them AB's

C'mon AJ...don't let either one go from the 25 man roster....this team is going to be fun to watch and surprise people this year

As a side note....took awhile to find the new site but glad I did....C'mon Baseball and Go Padres !!

I can't believe they haven't made any announcements on roster moves today.

12 position players, right?

Hedges,Hosmer, Asuaje, Galvis, Headley, Pirella, Margot, Myers, Renfroe, Ellis, Spangenberg, Villanueva.

OF depth with Spangy and Renfroe. IF depth with Spangy, Pirella, Villanueva. There's speed and some power.

Defense might be an issue but overall, probably the 12 best guys we've got. Jankowski starts in AAA and we see him the minute somebody goes down. Franchy needs a full season in AAA.

At last count still 43 players in ML camp ... including quite a few non-roster invitees ... I guess there is no rush to make moves but would have expected some culling of the herd by now. Maybe more of the calls are closer than we think. I can see them not wanting to prematurely waste an option year on some player only to have him recalled due to an injury or a separate player move. Same maybe goes for players they have to release. Could also be that Preller is working on some minor deals slowing down the announcements. Hard to see that logic impact 13 players at this point. Maybe they just employee the old Orsen Wells view (paraphrased) "we move no players until their time" and must.

Don't know whether it is just filler commentary but the thought of keeping three catchers is being tossed around (with 13 position players) to START the season ... maybe not needing the extra RP early ... keep both Ellis (defense) and Lopez (LHH PH). With all the pitchers without options and non-r0ster contenders ... that just shifts the roster problem to the pitchers. Not sure I can figure out Green's thinking surrounding all of this but not looking good for Spangenberg (who I think would be the idea Ben Zobrist utility option on a short bench).

Lets not forget around April 20th or so when pads gain an extra yr of control guys like Lauer..Urias and Lucchesi could be pushing vets out of their spots.... I don't see Urias spending more than 20 days at EP...

Like those prospects but don't see any of them pushing out the veterans early in the season ... the only way they are called-up early is due to injuries / significant under performance by the incumbents. Expect more of a mid-season or post trade-deadline move. Side benefit of the later call-up is they will not qualify for Super 2 status.

Villanueva has been told he has made the Opening day roster.

Combine that with the news we may keep 3 Catchers and it's not looking good for Spangenberg and Szczur.

Spangy,Jankowski and Margot are "my" kind of players and I won't be happy if Freddie AND Spangy start in AAA.

On a team without a true clean up hitter(even with one really) I want as much speed on the team as we can get.

Speed helps on defense,in the batters box and on the bases.Just the issue it creates for Pitchers is an advantage we need.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out over the next couple days for sure.

Beginning to look like the Padres will have no issue in making 40 man roster spots for the non-roster players they may select. Very probably they will (can) put on the 60 day DL:

  1. Dickerson .... is having the TJ and gone for the year
  2. Cordoba ... had a severe concussion in an auto accident before ST ... has not played ... no timetable for him being ready
  3. Rea ... has not pitched in ST and no word on when he will start ... expect (when ready) extended ST and rehab

Then add the likely release of Szczur and (probably) Lyles since both are out of options .... and as many as 5 non-roster types COULD be added ... not likely so there is some flexibility.

After Ross (almost a certainty) and one catcher (a certainty) then could be room for Lopez (3rd catcher) or Young (long relief) or even Cimber (long relief and tearing up ST). If they don't use all the 60 day DL exemptions ... and they linger ... will be easy to add some of the prospects mid-season without having to deal with DFA issues. Setting up well, I guess.

I just am having trouble following the logic surrounding the rumored bench structure (even if they start with 5 by going down one RP). Last set of thinking was settling with:

  1. Ellis ... back-up catcher for defensive / mentoring value for Hedges and the young pitchers (note a one and done player)
  2. Lopez ... less a back-up catcher and more a LHH bat off the bench (some value for 2019 I guess but would hold that if in AAA)
  3. Villanueva ... back-up 3B/1B/SS and RHH PH (maybe 3B when Headley moves on)
  4. Renfroe / Pirela ... one is a back-up OF and Pirela can back-up 2B (poorly)
  5. Jankowski ... LHH who can back-up all three OF slots with defense a major plus (late inning replacement type)

Cordero's injury has likely sent him to AAA, so not a factor. That grouping gives a pair of LHH bench options to PH and a pair of RHH bench options to PH (doubt the have Ellis as a high PH option). Szczur seems a release candidate ... not much need for a reserve RHH OF. Plus, on about a month when the need that 13 pitcher one of those 5 will be out (optioned / released / traded).

None of this sounds good for Spangenberg (who I still think would be the ideal LHH super-utility bench guy for the INF/OF/PH/PR). Better LHH than Jankowski or Lopez and more versatile. Then add he has a legit shot at being the 3B post-Headley (at least in a platoon with Villanueva) and should be better developed getting ML AB.
