2018 Starting Lineup--25 Man Roster
Quote from MrPadre19 on March 13, 2018, 3:50 pmQuote from Booster SD on March 13, 2018, 10:43 amI think Pirela will start 5-6 days a week mostly in LF, until/if the league proves his bat was a fluke last season and in Spring this year. He is just hitting too well not to play.
So you’re thinking Renfroe sits?
Or is he AND Cordero in AAA?
I think they want both to play every day so if they aren’t starting in S.D. they will be starting in EP.....right?

Quote from hoffy51 on March 13, 2018, 4:15 pmI would be nice to have a guy who could do some damage as a DH when we play American League teams at their park. Ideally, Renfroe would be that guy. Boy is this a big year for him. Fish or cut bait.

Might not survive the next couple of days as the Padres start paring down.

Thats my guess as of this moment. Let Cordero and Renfroe bat everyday in EP and see what Pirela does in SD. They both need to work on pitch selection and batting against their same hand pitching. See what you have in Pirela until the ASG and then go from there. If Cordero and Renfroe are tearing it up, live with Pirela at 2B for awhile and see what Renfroe can do first. And then based on what you get with Renfroe, see what you have in Cordero. Then at the end of the year all 3 have relatively the same amount of ML success Cordero by pure speed and defense becomes the guy. If that happens, IMO Cordero goes to RF, Myers slides to LF and Margot stays in CF, giving Myers the winter to learn the different angles from LF. Leaving both Renfroe and Pirela as 2019 Winter trade bait. Unless you think the DH is coming soon, then you keep Renfroe as the DH, and trade Pirela as he is the oldest and probably soonest to start fading.

IF both he and Cordero end up in AAA to start the season .... can always call up Renfroe for those inter-league games IF they project LHPs starting or call up Cordero if they project RHP. Much would depend who is on the 25 man ... with options ... that could be sent down.
More likely Headley is the 3B and Villanueva gets the DH vs. LHP ... vs. RHP might depend who else sticks Jankowski or ??????
Not sure why they are not all that interested in Spangenberg as the reserve, LHH, super utility INF/OF (assuming Asuaje is the 2B) .... not great but with only 3 bench position players having Jankowski (all 3 OF), Villanueva (1B/SS/3B), and Spangenberg (every position in a pinch) creates a lot of coverage with guys that are not going to play a lot at any one slot. Starters will need days off and there will be NON-DL injuries for the day to day stuff.

Quote from fenn68 on March 14, 2018, 6:31 amSort of being under discussed is the RP. Green seems to have Hand, Yates, Stammen, and Makita as "locks" but that leaves four open spots and they may not be as clear cut.
Out of options are Lyles (but performing poorly) and Capps (performing up and down) ... Maton is returning (but faded at the end of 2017 and not all that impressive in ST) .... LH options are Baumann (so-so but returning), McGrath (doing well but not getting much hype), Strahm (still trying to get his endurance back after a winter where his knee prevented him from cardio work ... plus the Padres seem to want to see him as a SP), Erlin (a different version of Strahm). Don't see four locks out of this group ... and a potential need for more RH arms. However, ST has put a few non-roster arms (besides Chris Young) into consideration:
- Cimber (27) ... side-armer with control ... ST: 7 innings; 0.00 ERA; 0.33 WHIP .... 2017: 80 innings in AAA/AA; 1.35 WHIP
- Stock (28) ... BIG FB around 99-100 MPH ... ST: 5.2 innings; 3.18 ERA; 1.24 WHIP ... 2017: 70 innings in A+/AA; 1.59 WHIP ... converted from catcher in 2012
- Aro (27) ... career MiL .... ST: 4.2 innings; 3.86 ERA; 0.86 WHIP ... 2017: 42.2 innings in AAA; 0.98 WHIP
All "interesting" given the completion ... one may sneak in for the opening day roster but look the others to be on the EP roster and poised to be added / called-up as the need arises. Although Cimber appears to be the best bet given his track record and funky delivery ... IF Balsley works his magic then Stock with that big FP might be the real prize of the group. Aro is probably longest shot of the group.

Quote from MrPadre19 on March 14, 2018, 1:41 pmIt would seem to me that Capps potential is too much to give up on.If he can regain his form from a couple seasons ago he would have good trade value or could become our closer if/when Hand is traded.

If he's not back to touching the upper 90's his potential is greatly reduced and may not be worth the trouble.
