The 10th round Padres select RHP Jose Quezada Texas Tech
Phew, is Jose Quezada’s stuff filthy for @TTU_Baseball. Strikes out the side in the 6th on plus sliders at 85 and 83 mph, plus a 95 mph heater. 5-foot-9 RHP with lightning in that right arm; pounding 93-95, slider has sharp late tilt. #AllFitt watch list for sure. #MLBDraft

B7 - JOSE! Quezada leaves the bases loaded with a big strikeout to end the inning! Big roar erupts from the crowd as Tech leads, 5-4. #WreckEm pic.twitter.com/6AKjpT5w7z

Must be his .246 BA in 500 AB's over 3 seasons that made AJ pick him in the 7th round because apparently, at 5ft9, they say he will never hit for power either. But he is an athlete (football WR/tackle) so we know AJ has a hard on for guys who also plays football and/or basketball. But, unlike Buddy Reed who had a similar football background and was also called a very raw hitting project, and who was much bigger than 5ft9 and who had started playing baseball a bit more only in the draft year, Harris has been playing 3 seasons of baseball, had 500 AB's and still couldn't hit for .250 in his 3rd year. His best was .278 in 2016, then he regressed each year after more baseball experience: .269 in 2017 and then .246 this year.
Pick 6 (Vega): no one at BA or MiLB or anyone on google could find anything about him, so who knows.
However picks 7 to 10 all seem like they should have been round 35 to 40 type picks, not top 10 rounds. It's nice to save money to try to go after day 3 higher ranked picks with strong commitments but how about still trying to find some half decent players in rounds 6 to 10.
After Bad Boy Harris at No 7, the guys on the MiLB broadcast said that Becker (#9) sucks badly defensively at any position (3B then 2B) but his scrappy bat is what will have to carry him in the pros. But, after checking, he never hit for more than .287 in 4 years of college so it's more crappy than scrappy, IMO. So he can't hit and he sucks defensively at any position. Yes!!!
Then, to complete the wasted last 5 picks, we select 2 non-ranked senior colleges pitchers with so-so control (4-5 walks per 9 innings ) at No 8 & 10. In August they turn 24 and 23 respectively. One had TJ already. I'm so excited!
End of rounds 7 to 10 rant.
Who would you have drafted instead? All I hear is Crickets.

Quote from Cptjack on June 5, 2018, 7:29 pmI couldn't pull up anything on Alexuan Vega Baez, he may be a HS version of a senior sign with more upside. If he's overslot then I simply don't know. I've never not been able to pull anything up on someone other than a facebook page change.
I don't know why anyone is upset over the 10k senior signs. You have to remember that they can't chance it on a non-committal HS or upside JR as they'll lose the slot value. It's just the game for the free 125k starting point.

Quote from Ryan Payne on June 5, 2018, 7:31 pmSome people bitch just to have a reason to bitch. This draft was very polarizing because of the lack of separation - Some analysts had Matthew Liberatore as the #2 overall player on the board, a couple didn't even have him in the top 10-15. Judging any picks within hours is foolish and short-sighted.

Could not agree more....also I think AJP took a couple of under slot college guys in the later rounds ..perhaps to steal a strong commit guy or 2...I think he might have stashed about $1 mil in savings for 1 or 2 big signings rds 11-40...makes sense with so many kids in AZL and short season...to go with a bit of quality vs quantity in rds 11-40...perhaps drafting as many as 10 HS kids in those rds with a goal of signing 1 2 or 3 of them...

Maybe for our 12th rounder....Sean Guilbe,a HS Infielder who was ranked #155 and id committed to University of Tenn.
I'm thinking they feel for the right $$ he'll sign?

Looks like an "easy" 87 but he also looks like he could easily gain some Velo. as he matures and bulks up some.
Is there video of him hitting 92+?
