2018 MLB DRAFT

PreviousPage 11 of 18Next

The guys on MLB.com just steamrolled over the Padres pick by continuing their discussion of the Mets' pick and totally ignoring Vega. Not much is coming up on him in my first Google searches. Maybe an 88-91 fastball with a curve?

The 6th round  Padres select LHP Alexuan Vega Leonides Morales Rodriguez HS

All I got is his fastball sits 86-92 and has a solid to good slider.

The 7th round  Padres select CF Jawuan Harris Rutgers

The 7th round  Padres select CF Jawuan Harris Rutgers

Two way player in Rutgers. Played safety position and played very well there. He is  better suited to play baseball. He has plus plus speed that makes him a plus defender with a avg arm. He hitting is a project. He needs to work on a better approach to the plate to hit for more gap power and more contact. He has a lot swing and miss to his swing.  Scouts say that Harris’ hit tool will markedly improve once he enters pro ball and focuses strictly on baseball instead of splitting his time between two sports.

Sounds like Buddy Reed in a way?

In Reeds case he got a late start in baseball altogether.

The 8th round  Padres select RHP Steven Wilson Santa Clara

The 8th round  Padres select RHP Steven Wilson Santa Clara

Six year senior. Fastball 90-93 mph while touching 94 with some run to it. He has a solid to good slider and avg to good curve and a good feel for a change up. He did have TJ surgery a year ago so his stuff could be better later on.

I can't wait to see AJ try to spin the solid make up of Jawuan Harris, suspended 3 times in the last 23 months by Rutgers for 3 separate violations of various team rules. Must be his .246 BA in 500 AB's over 3 seasons that made AJ pick him in the 7th round because apparently, at 5ft9, they say he will never hit for power either. But he is an athlete (football WR/tackle) so we know AJ has a hard on for guys who also plays football and/or basketball. But, unlike Buddy Reed who had a similar football background and was also called a very raw hitting project, and who was much bigger than 5ft9 and who had started playing baseball a bit more only in the draft year, Harris has been playing 3 seasons of baseball, had 500 AB's and still couldn't hit for .250 in his 3rd year. His best was .278 in 2016, then he regressed each year after more baseball experience: .269 in 2017 and then .246 this year.

Pick 6 (Vega): no one at BA or MiLB or anyone on google could find anything about him, so who knows.

However picks 7 to 10 all seem like they should have been round 35 to 40 type picks, not top 10 rounds. It's nice to save money to try to go after day 3 higher ranked picks with strong commitments but how about still trying to find some half decent players in rounds 6 to 10.

After Bad Boy Harris at No 7, the guys on the MiLB broadcast said that Becker (#9) sucks badly defensively at any position (3B then 2B) but his scrappy bat is what will have to carry him in the pros. But, after checking, he never hit for more than .287 in 4 years of college so it's more crappy than scrappy, IMO. So he can't hit and he sucks defensively at any position. Yes!!!

Then, to complete the wasted last 5 picks, we select 2 non-ranked senior colleges pitchers with so-so control (4-5 walks per 9 innings ) at No 8 & 10. In August they turn 24 and 23 respectively. One had TJ already. I'm so excited!

End of rounds 7 to 10 rant.

The 9th round  Padres select 2b Luke Becker  Kentucky

He is a switch hitter .

Looking forward to hearing the Madfriars breakdown of this draft. Outside of Dylan Coleman and Dwanya Willaims-Sutton, Day 2 felt very underwhelming.
