Arizona Fall League

  • RHP Jesse Scholtens (El Paso) struck out two over a scoreless inning in Peoria’s 5-2 win over Mesa, lowering his ERA to 2.38 over 11 1/3 innings. He has struck out 10 against six walks this fall.
  • RHP Jose Quezada (El Paso) has struck out eight against two walks while allowing five earned runs in 9 2/3 innings (4.66 ERA). Quezada has also saved a game for Peoria.
  • INF Matt Batten (El Paso) is hitting .288/.408/.322 with two doubles and seven RBIs in 10 games played.
  • Chandler Seagle (San Antonio) is hitting .292/.320/.500 with two doubles and a homer in eight games played.

Mexican winter league

  • OF Tirso Ornelas (Fort Wayne) is hitting .388/.423/.517 with homer and 18 RBIs in 30 games with Navojoa. He has struck out just 12 times against seven walks.
  • OF Agustin Ruiz (San Antonio) is hitting .250/.348/.400 with two RBIs in 11 games with Jalisco.
  • Gilberto Vizcarra (Lake Elsinore) is 5-for-7 with a double and two RBIs in five games with Mexicali.

Dominican winter league

  • RHP Steven Wilson (El Paso) is up to 11 strikeouts without issuing a walk over seven shutout innings to start his stay with Escogido. He has allowed only two hits and saved two games.

Venezuelan winter league

  • Juan Fernandez (San Antonio) is hitting .472/.535/.833 with three homers and 13 RBIs in 12 games with La Guaira.

All 9 of these players are Rule 5 eligible so it will be interesting to see if they have attracted any attention if/when the Rule 5 draft is held.  As for protecting any of them on the Padres 40-man, maybe a couple may make it - Wilson and Ornelas; Wilson more so than Ornelas.  Vizcarra is a longshot while all the rest will probably skate through.  Going to play winter ball in Venezuela is pretty sketchy, so I hope Fernandez remains safe down there.

I am REALLY hoping Tirso breaks out in 22’.

Tirso Ornelas, OF, Mayos De Navojoa (Mexico)
SD No. 29

There were reasons to be down on Ornelas heading into the offseason, including his .248/.344/.389 line at High-A and the Padres' decision to leave him off the 40-man ahead of the Rule 5 Draft. He's changing some of that narrative right now in the Mexican Winter League. His .386 average and 14 doubles both lead the circuit through 41 games, while his .939 OPS places third among qualifiers. The 21-year-old was especially hot during a 15-game hitting streak from Oct. 13-30, going 27-for-61 (.443) with only six strikeouts in that span. It likely won't be enough to get Ornelas a Rule 5 spot, but this should certainly boost his profile among San Diego prospects.

Steven Wilson, RHP, Leones Del Escogido (D.R.)
SD No. 21

For the second straight year, Wilson is getting comfortable in the Dominican Republic. The 27-year-old right-hander had a 1.88 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 14 1/3 innings with Escogido during the 2020-21 season and has been even more untouchable this time around. He has yet to surrender an earned run and has fanned 14 over 10 frames in the last month. Opposing batters are only 2-for-32 (.063) against him to this point, and his 0.30 WHIP is lowest among LIDOM pitchers with double-digit innings.
