New report is that Darvish WILL NOT START tonight’s game per the Japan manager.

This really has to tick off Melvin and the Padres who were already upset that Darvish was not getting his regular innings and not be stretched out to get ready for the regular season. Another report suggests the handling of Darvish in the WBC may cause a delay in his first regular season start off opening day (and maybe some shorter initial starts).

IF Musgrove is not ready and Darvish is not ready … opening day starter, second game starter may be an interesting call … and with Tatis out and likely Nola and maybe Soto out … not the way to start a championship season … at least it is a 162 game season.

It would look as of now the opening day starter might be Snell, followed by Wacha. Not exactly the way SD would script the SP for opening the season.

Havent seen how much Martinez has been used in the WBC, not sure how he has been stretched out either.

It sounds like Japan is basically using an opener. Darvish will be the bulk guy. I think they're just trying to cover a few innings before Darvish and Ohtani take it the rest of the way.

As for Martinez they apparently told him he wasn't likely to pitch again in the tournament and he decided to go back to camp to get ready for the Padres season. I think that's actually commendable on his part.

It's commendable to quit on your team and your country?

How many games has he pitched in since he quit?  If he doesn't start for the Padres and he quits on them is that commendable?

You can tell him how commendable he is for quitting and I'll be the one booing the hell out of him.

He said from the start he was only going to do it if he could stay on track as a starter. He talked to Derosa after his first start and was told he likely wouldn't pitch again. He decided to come get prepared for the Padres season rather than sit in the dugout. He went 4 innings in a B game on Sunday. He's doing what he feels he needs to do to be ready as a starter when the season starts. What he did had zero effect on Team USA.

Doesn’t he also have a responsibility to his Padre teammates, Melvin, Siedler, Padre fans to do whatever it takes to be ready for the season rather than just sitting on the bench for the WBC?

Might be a stronger argument if he was actually going to play for the USA. IF Team USA had no issue … not sure any reason we should.

If he had just walked out and "quit" that would be different....I'm sure there was plenty of discussion and everyone was OK with it.

I would much rather he was with the Padres getting ready for April than just being a cheerleader at the WBC.

Looks like Darvish is just going to be a cheerleader for tonights game.  For me, better he not get in than pitch one inning in relief.  Back to Peoria and get ready for opening day.  Correction - just as I posted this, Darvish left to go to the bullpen; may be in the game in the 7th and 8th.

In for the 8th, and I am not sure if I want Darvish to pitch well so he is ready for the season. Or to give it up for a USA comeback.

Another great game. Congratulations to Samurai Japan. The whole tournament was a lot of fun.

Ohtani showing why it's going to take an arm and a leg to sign him.  All puns intended.  Padres go all in but very difficult to hold off the Dodgers siren song.  Easily 500M but over 14 years, ONLY 35.7M per year AAV if at 500M!
