Trade Deadline
Quote from fenn68 on July 25, 2025, 8:53 amQuote from MrPadre19 on July 25, 2025, 7:21 amNo matter what happens on the field the next two weeks I don't see any way Preller concedes 2025 and becomes a seller.
Agree to a degree ... I am buying into being both a buyer and seller to maximize the value of the FA to be while upgrading positions of perceived more need ... and control the cash flow and maybe improving 2026.
So, depend how one interprets a trade's objective / end result in conjunction with all the moves.
Doubt even an 0-6 run to the trade deadline will alter Preller (too much) in his desire to contend in 2025.

This is what I mean.
Also,AJ is always thinking ahead too though.....which is why, depending on the competition for his target(s) and cost,he most likely will be after players with at least control through next season as we have no one coming for '26 for LF or C.
Only way he goes with a rental is if the asking prices just exceed his perceived value of the player(s).
Which is why he has been said to be so interested in Duran and Kwan.
Shoot for the controlled guys and settle for the rentals if you have to
Man i would LOVE Steven KWAN leading off for us the next 2-1/2 years!

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 25, 2025, 10:54 amLaureano has a decent club option for 2026 so liking that idea a bit more...esp since the cost will be a lot less than the big names.
But,he's exceeding just about every other season he's ever had.....could be a "buy high" situation.

Quote from fenn68 on July 25, 2025, 12:10 pmI would not rule out some "rentals" in conjunction with also doing more durable deals. Need a lot of upgrades and not a lot to work with. Did notice the "minimal" return BALT got for a rental of a decent RP Soto ... best of the two is a low A pitcher ranked in the late teens in the Mets system.
So if the Padres can land a useful upgrade for someone using a low A low level prospect ... should do it and not just wait for the bigger move (that may not come).

Quote from ultratvfan on July 25, 2025, 3:02 pmThe Mariners and Diamondbacks made the first significant move of deadline season on Thursday evening. Seattle acquired first baseman Josh Naylor for rookie left-hander Brandyn Garcia and pitching prospect Ashton Izzi. Naylor and Garcia are each on the 40-man roster, so no additional moves were required in that regard. The D-Backs recalled Tristin English to fill the spot on the active roster.

Has the Dbacks given up and become sellers? Naylor is a top hitter.

We might become sellers also, this team is a mess to be honest. 🤦

Quote from fenn68 on July 26, 2025, 6:23 amDid see a few comments on discussions of deals that included Salas ... teams are asking and, apparently, the Padres are not rejecting out of hand.
Not that they are correct but most don't seem to be worried by his injury ... and value his potential "gold glove" defense. Can't tell how much value teams are putting on Salas in a trade or how much Preller would hold out for before considering trading him.
Reportedly Preller offered BOST Cease, Salas, and another MiL prospect for Duran. BOST rejected that. No confirmation.

If AJP made that offer and Boston rejected it, they are idiots. I'd do that trade in a NY second if I was offered that as the Boston GM.

Guess it depends on who the other prospect(s) were. Cease is just a two month rental, and Salas is hurt and at least two years away. Boston is still expecting to compete this year and next. I’m sure they’d want someone they could plug-in next year as well at minimum for Duran who has multiple years of control.
