Agree to a degree ... I am buying into being both a buyer and seller to maximize the value of the FA to be while upgrading positions of perceived more need ... and control the cash flow and maybe improving 2026.

So, depend how one interprets a trade's objective / end result in conjunction with all the moves.

Doubt even an 0-6 run to the trade deadline will alter Preller (too much) in his desire to contend in 2025.

Also,AJ is always thinking ahead too though.....which is why,depending on the competition for his target(s) and cost,he most likely will be after players with at least control through next season as we have no one coming for '26 for LF or C.

Only way he goes with a rental is if the asking prices just exceed his perceived value of the player(s).

Which is why he has been said to be so interested in Duran and Kwan.

Shoot for the controlled guys and settle for the rentals if you have to

I would not rule out some "rentals" in conjunction with also doing more durable deals. Need a lot of upgrades and not a lot to work with. Did notice the "minimal" return BALT got for a rental of a decent RP Soto ... best of the two is a low A pitcher ranked in the late teens in the Mets system.

So if the Padres can land a useful upgrade for someone using a low A low level prospect ... should do it and not just wait for the bigger move (that may not come).

Guess it depends on who the other prospect(s) were. Cease is just a two month rental, and Salas is hurt and at least two years away. Boston is still expecting to compete this year and next. I’m sure they’d want someone they could plug-in next year as well at minimum for Duran who has multiple years of control.
