Are any of the players acquired contracted for next year? Sure as hell hope not, as none are of any great value. And we'll need the 40 man spots.

Scott Barlow is Arb eligible again next season…so should be a Padre.

He’s also a very good pitcher….he’s been hurt this year so I would not judge him on just his 23’ stats.

Certainly needs to take Garcia or Honeywells spot…..those guys are killing us.

Yeah, Garcia has been bad throughout. Honeywell....hitters seemed to have figured him out.

There'll definitely be openings in our pen next year.

If Barlow is a quality arm, happy to have him on board.

The Padres have acquired first baseman Garrett Cooper and minor league lefty Sean Reynolds from the Marlins in exchange for left-hander Ryan Weathers, reports Craig Mish of SportsGrid and the Miami Herald.

"All in burns Weathers."  @Fenn, what have you seen from Weathers that gives you any hope he can be even an average major league starter?  I haven't seen anything that provides hope of that.  As always, time will tell, maybe a change of scenery help Weathers' development, but I have seen enough of Weathers in the rotation in San Diego.  He was given plenty of opportunities and it just didn't work out.

Not opposed to the deal but Weathers is 23 with a lot of control and a top draft pick … development takes time. Keep thinking the quick trigger on Quantrill.

I share your concern.  We seem to have trouble developing young starters and trade them only to have their next organization “fix” them.  Lauer, Quantrill, probably Gore.

In fact, Who’s the last starter we’ve developed??

Guy I hated to lose was Williams.  You could see the flashes of something special in his coming back from TJ surgery.  Looks like a solid #3, possibly 2, if he fully recovers from the surgery.  Weathers was a reach when he was drafted and has never really put it together; his best chance will be out of the pen as a long man.  Wolf was making progress but will never be more than a #5 starter, if that.  Another long relief prospect out of the pen.

Barlow has been hurt this year but was very good in his two previous years.  Won't have to close but a solid option along with Suarez in the second half in high leverage situations.  Allows us to spot relief Garcia and Honeywell and send Avila back down.  If Lugo moves to pen, even stronger.

Interesting analysis, thanks.

I read on another forum that Williams looked really good in low-A but not so great in high-A since being promoted there.

And can someone explain Wolf for Hill? 24 year old LH starting pitcher for a 43 year old LH starting pitcher?

Jesus, Preller must be SUPER desperate, realising his a** is grass in 2 months time.

Going to regret getting absolutely ZERO for 5 inning Snell and Never 3 in a row Hader.

I guess it really did end up being a tough market for buyers.  At least that’s what it seems like.  We either pay the required price to acquire a vet like Hill for added depth, or just cross our fingers that all of our starters remain healthy.  And with Wacha out and Musgrove missing today’s start due to shoulder stiffness, it looks like we’ll need the extra starter.

None of the young Starters we've traded have been TOR guys though.

Lauer had a good 21'...but he would be our 6th or 7th starter if we had him now.

Cal had 3 good seasons in Clev.

Definitely could have used him in 21' and 22'.

But at least these guys,or others we've traded, haven't become perennial All Stars since being dealt.

Fried?

Definitely would like to have him back but he was injured at the time we traded him and so there was definitely doubt about his future.Plus he was a top prospect when we traded him so can't really say he "got fixed" with someone else.

Time will tell, but I don't think we're really going to miss any of the guys we just moved. Generally I agree with MrP about trading prospects for players. AJ has traded a lot of talent though. Off the top of my head active guys that have at least been contributors at the major league level would be.

C- Grandal

IF- Turner, France, Naylor, Abrams, Urias, Peterson, Miller

OF- Suwinkski, Ruiz, Renfroe, Margot

DH- Rooker, Reyes

SP- Fried, Eflin, Gore, Quantrill, Lauer

RP- Bednar, Clase, Munoz, Brash, De Los Santos, Maton, Thompson

I'm sure I'm forgetting a few guys. Then there are prospects and young guys that still have a chance like Wood, Hassell, Susana, Arias, Cantillo, Caissie, Ryan and more.

They weren't all prospects at the time, some were involved with deals we're happy with, some have been inconsistent and some were late development success stories, but he's definitely moved a lot of talent.

My comment on Williams - he did not pitch in Hi A this year, only Low A.  Coming back from TJ is a long process as we see with Lesko but both Lesko and Williams are going to be good with Lesko having the chance to be exceptional.   A possible silver lining, if not seriously hurt, is the emergence of Isaiah Lowe taken in the 11th round last year.  From what I saw in just the few appearances he made before going on the injured list (11.1 IP), he might turn out to be just as good as Williams.

You got me curious about Quantrill and Lauer so I looked up their stats.  They were both very good in ‘21 and ‘22, but are having a very bad season thus far this year.  I do wonder, however, whether they would have succeeded had they remained with us, due to our poor record in developing starting pitchers.

BTW, look at the list of relievers we’ve traded away in Jeremy’s post, guys.  Holy cow!  I mean, just…wow!
