The negative air surrounding Campusano as a prospect is unreal. There's no guarantee that he's our #1. That's despite his improvement defensively this year. 35% caught stealing with the new rules working against him is impressive.

Merrill has some glowing peripherals that scouts will rave about. If he played all season it wouldn't be the coin toss that it is heading into the offseason reranks.

I guess I'm missing something....I know he hasn't been improving but other than his slugging %  down some his numbers are just about the same as always?

Aren't they?

What's missing are Doubles it looks like.

He is on fire 🔥 at the moment.. Mazara has to be optioned or DFA and Campusano needs to catch Yu and Co.. cause with Nola behind the plate P can't walk or allow singles to anyone...especially in the postseason

I dont care if Nola calls the game and tells Campy/Alfaro where to set up from the dugout ..BUT he can't be C anyone....

I guess it depends who is looking a what to rank Campusano’s status.

He elevated his ranking to the upper tier of prospects in   2019 (High A) with a 148 wRC+ as a 20 year old.

However, 2020 is a no play … then 2021 (age 22) went to AAA (El Paso a hitters park) and his wRC+ dropped to 122. This year (age 23) still in AAA and wRC+ continued to drop to 114 in his second go around in AAA.

Defense was never his strong  point … it was his bat as a catcher the got people excited … that may not be improving at the upper level. Plus, in his small sample size in the ML … totally over matched.

Still see Campusano as a legit ML prospect … but maybe some doubt is creeping in. At 24 next season needs to be in the ML and hitting. A third season in AAA just does not add to his resume … especially with Alfaro / Nola “blocking him”.

Maybe more of a lowering his ceiling in the ML than making him a non-prospect.

——————————————————-

IF Campusano does not beat out either Alfaro / Nola next ST and gets optioned to AAA … his prospect status should drop considerably … unless he is traded.

The stolen bases are on Darvish not Nola. Johnny Bench or Pudge Rodriguez couldnt throw out runners with Darvish on the mound.

Agree to disagree ..they stole on Nola even after Yu left the game yesterday..and they've stole on Nola no Matter who he is catching.. Clevinger the night before... etc..etc.. not just Yu

I think you're both right. Nola has a weak arm leading to below average pop times. Alfaro has the second best pop times in the league off the strength of his arm. Nola has allowed 39 stolen bases in 44 attempts. Alfaro has allowed 17 in 22 attempts. Alfaro is clearly better, but still not great. That's where the pitchers factor in. Some of these guys are getting massive jumps. The pitchers need to do a better job holding runners to give our guys a chance.

Correct, SD had this problem a couple of years ago as well with a different batch of pitchers. They didnt care about holding runners and wanted the better pitch.

However, Nola can throw out runners. His first season in SD, his CS% rate was 55%.

So I will say, it is mostly landing on the pitchers at this time.

You are correct, Nola cannot throw anyone out. Neither can Alfaro. Neither can Campusano. So we have 3 catchers who cannot throw out base-stealers to save their lives. Cam Gallagher CAN. Perhaps that is why we traded for him?

Not sure if any of the prospect ranking folks really do a full blown re-ranking process mid-season. Clearly MLBPipeline doesn’t … just adds who was next on their list from pre-season to the bottom as others get traded or graduate. Others just “stick in” the old list new system adds.

I would expect a lot of significant ups and down movement when the post-season re-rankings occur.

I would not put Campusano in that group. He has thrown out 19 out of 55 attempts this year (35%) and his arm was rated “60”.

He may have a lot of deficiencies as a catcher but the arm and throwing out runners is not one. More along the lines of calling games, working with the pitchers, blocking balls.

The Gallagher deal probably was veteran insurance for 2022 in case Alfaro or Nola got injured. No long term value in my mind. However, was clue as to how the Padres view Campusano’s readiness for the ML.

Luis Campusano has an average pop-time of between 2.0 and 2.05. That would rank between #46-#68 on the MLB leaderboard behind both Alfaro and Nola. In fact Alfaro has the second best average pop-time in MLB. I'm starting to think our Catchers may not be the problem.
