Texas Rangers at San Diego Padres: July 4-6
Quote from fenn68 on July 5, 2025, 2:29 amLet's give some credit to Vasquez for another quality game going 6 with only 2 runs. Although Grant was praising Tatis' effort on the hit that scored the 2 runs ... sure looked to me that Tatis took a bad route before just missing the catch.
Would not have bet on Vasquez being an effective (3.79 ERA / 18 starts) for the Padres in 2025 before the season.

Quote from ultratvfan on July 5, 2025, 9:47 pmWell, the Padres could not capitalize on the Dodgers loss today and could not produce in a bases loaded situation.
Kolek did no look good. Arraez has a 4-hit night. Cronenworth 2 for 3, HR and 2 RBI. Bogaerts not hot anymore. He is hitless in this series.
The Padres need to take the rubber match for the series.
GO PADRES!

Now it seems they are going with a bullpen day with Morgan listed as the SP.
Suggest even less faith in calling up Hart for a spot start. Cruz pitched yesterday so same could be said for him (they know this day was coming). Waldron not eligible to return.
I guess the only other option would have been adding a non-roster SP (Baez or Nett) but that would be a big leap from AA.
Bergert and Darvish should (or could) be activated by the end the week or let linger until after the All-Star break.

Too bad Darvish couldn’t at least give us the first three

A bit frustrated with Darvish ... pitched a number of rehab and sim games getting innings but still not able to give some innings today ... needs even more time. Injury is injury so don't want to force rush but still frustrating and does insert some concern about the effectiveness (or even the lasting return) of Darvish.
Padres have to get lucky today ... if Morgan and the first in RP struggle and the Padres get behind ... might see some poor RP just get left in to take the beating then get optioned to get a fresh RP up for next week.

Bullpen game followed by a Darvish start (probably on pitch count) seems like a bad idea.
Wonder why he just doesn’t start tonight and try to get us 3-4 innings then bring in Morgan etc.?
