Going into the season, was relying on the "core 6" to carry to offense and just hoped the mix in the last three could just keep the heads above water. Well, missing half of the core 6 (Merrill, Arraez, Cronenworth) and severe underperformance by Machado and Bogaerts (especially in the last two weeks) just destroyed the team. Really only Tatis is making an impact.
Of the others not even close to being "average". Sheets, Gonzalez, and Iglesias had early hot streaks but have since faded (more aligned with pre-season expectations), Ornelas, Joe, and McCoy have provided near zip on their call-ups, and Gurriel, Diaz, and Maldonado just can't hit. Wade has been a plus upon his return but his history will rise and return him to a sub-.200 hitter.
Better reinforcements in AAA? Only see POTENTIALLY Campusano and taking a shot at Perlaza (has to be at least as good as what the ML team has with a chance of an upgrade). Actually hoping for Heyward to return (but suspect not soon).
Padres need some health to return.

Gillaspie out with a "right oblique strain" ... that should spell an IL stint that could turn into a 60 day if needed (see Waldron).
Call-up TBD.
In the short run, this injury should secure Bergert as the long man on the ML roster.

Can someone please remind me....in the post season vs. The Duds, we weren't scoring( deja vu!) and Schildt A) left the line up as is, or B) moved guys around?
I remember he caught grief for doing whatever he did.
I know this situation is different because half the line up is on IR( and ALL of left handed sticks!) but other than FTJ in the leadoff spot, does he start jumbling the order? Keep Wade in the 9 hole because of his wheels in front of Fernando, maybe bring up Eguy and Campusano( shift out Guriel, Maldonado, McCoy, maybe Tirso?).
When are Jake and Jackson due back? We can't keep rolling out the same bats and expect different results, can we? Too many dead spots in the line up right now.

With 6 of the current starting line-up honestly not (or no longer) ML hitters ... Machado / Bogaerts not hitting ... no point in over thinking the batting order, it will not make much of a difference but it may show a sign of panic by Shildt that actually could have a negative impact.
Sounds as though Arraez, Merrill, and Cronenworth will all be back in about a week. That should eliminate McCoy and Joe plus a debate on the next out between Ornelas and Gurriel. At that point, I could make the case for dropping both and adding Perlaza, switch hitter and corner OF/DH. who would be hard pressed to hit worse than Ornelas or Gurriel are doing.
Do think Campusano can upgrade the offense but does seem that Shildt wants a plus defensive C (that is not Campusano baring an injury). So, keep Campusano catching in EP to hone his skills (if at this point they can) and ready insurance OR call him up to DH? Sheets after his hot start has really fallen, Gonzalez has little impact and the others are likely already ticketed out.
Honest don't think Shildt can do anything to improve this offense until the injured return and Machado / Bogaerts wake-up ... then see what he has working ... and then make the "fringe" fringe moves.

Another twist is the injury to Gillaspie. Don't think Reynolds is ready just yet and Marinaccio has been terrible. The latter has a 6.14 ERA/FIP despite a BABIP rate of .238; his giving up 2.5 HRs per 9 innings certainly is the reason and I just wouldn't want him in my stellar bullpen at this time.
Because it is to replace an injured player, I think Hart can cut short his 10 day stay in the minors and fill the same kind of role as Bergert. Non-roster pitchers Francis Pena and Bradgley Rodriguez may be others to consider.
Lots of nonproducers on the offensive side. Big turnover predicted by or after the SF series. Perlaza is going to be tough to keep off the roster - swinging with a lot of confidence and K rate only 20.2% while BB rate is around 8%. Not very nimble as a corner OF but not an embarrassment. Switch-hitting is a plus; takes Gurriel's spot on the 40 man.

Sounds like they called up David Morgan to replace Gillaspie.

Just another wild card ... apparently Mason McCoy injured one of his fingers in diving back to the back last night ... another IL?
INF shortage if McCoy, Cronenworth, and Arraez remain on the IL unless Wade swings to the INF ... then a CF shortage until Merrill or Lockridge or Heyward return. So, should make for an interesting move to replace McCoy if needed now.
Full 40 so another to the 60 day IL (Gillaspie) or a DFA (Marinaccio or Gurriel)?

With the exception of giving up 3 HRs in the bandbox/high elevation of Amarillo, David Morgan has been lights out. I can see why they want to bring him up. Padres only put Gillaspie on 15 day IL, so need a roster spot. They have a lot of options and I don't think we'll miss anyone who goes on the 60 day or is released, unless they want to give Darvish a little more time officially.
