Spring Training 2024

Although Bradgley Rodriguez was shaky against the first batter he faced, the rest of his stint on the mound was very very good.  Even though he hadn't pitched against opposing batters for the last 2 years, he threw some absolutely nasty stuff paired with what looked like mid-90's velocity and decent control.  I saw what I was looking for and can see him going directly to Lake Elsinore to open the season and skipping the ACL altogether.   It's going to be a fun staff to watch - possibly Haynes, Lowe, Nett, Pinales, Montgomery and Rodriguez although one or two could be placed in Ft. Wayne or may be in extended ST after coming back from injury.

Dinger from Tirso and a super impressive PA from De Vries... worked the count full with 3 or 4 foul balls and drew the walk.

From the MadFriars write up of the SBG ...

A pitcher attracting some attention around camp is righthander Bradgley Rodriguez, 20, from Venezuela. He spent all of 2022 and 2023 on the IL, ultimately undergoing elbow surgery, but has impressed numerous organization evaluators with his ability to unleash 100 mph fastballs and offset them with a developing changeup. He got top Mariners’ prospect Harry Ford on a strikeout and didn’t give up a run in his inning of work. His only professional experience so far came back in 2021 in the Dominican Summer League, so he’ll get plenty of runway in his first season stateside.

Estrada optioned to EP.

Nik McLaughry with an at bat last night.

Anyone else think that’s from out of nowhere?

I think he also got into one of the earlier ST games (maybe the prospects game).

Must be impressing in camp … was supposed to be a plus defensive SS and the minors don’t have a deep squad of SS/2B … maybe just cultivating him for a needed system fill. Not supposed to be a good hitter.

14 pitchers remain on the 26 man including Avila, Morejon, and Kolek. Kolek seems to be a lock, Morejon has a minor league option so good guess that Avila makes the roster.

Waldron looks to have the #5 SP slot putting Avila and Brito the long RP.

Do we go 6 man rotation early, if at all, this year?

If so, Brito #6?

Expect more of a "spot starter" as needed than a 6 man rotation. Padres have the first three Thursdays off in April and that should give decent breaks on a 5 man rotation. Also, given the shorter ST, might take the starting 5 a bit longer to build up to go 6+ innings and the need for a long RP may fit better.
