Spring Training 2023

1st Cactus League game is Friday oh doctor!

If he stays healthy 🔥 🔥

Been saying Ryan a new man after marriage and working out with Joe all offseason..

Not sure why all here are certain that Azocar is headed for AAA?

Dude was the starting CF for a portion of a season, on a team that went to the NLCS. He is more than capable of starting( and defending well!) at all 3 OF spots. And he was much better at the dish last year than the 2 guys he's competing against ( Dahl and Engel)

I'd be totally shocked if Sugar doesn't break camp to SD.

Probably will break Camp with the Padres...but who goes when Tatis returns?

Dahl being LH helps his case "if" he hits.

Its about storing as much talent in the organization as possible. If all three, Azocar, Engel, and Dahl all perform about the same in ST, he is the one that can be optioned to AAA without losing him, as he has options left.

If Dahl and Engel both perform well in ST, then just because of the options, Azocar will be the odd man out and start in AAA. Plus, with his age, he will also benefit from starting everyday, and after Tatis return, he would be regulated to bench duty, and that will do him no good.

Engel has the inside track since he was signed as a FA and has no minor league options.

Azocar is second considering he is on the roster (but has minor league options)

Dahl and Schrock are long shots being non-roster and would have to be added and unless the Padres believed they were sticking for the long haul … probably not adding them for just 20 days.

Then don’t forget Dixon and Batten who are on the roster.

Starting 8 (with Tatis) plus Campusano, Carpenter, Cruz, Engel, plus 1 … plus 2nd pre-Tatis. ST will matter but it is the 13th spot with little playing time so not sure how much a LHH is valued vs the roster spot for a non-roster player vs INF/OF/baserunning versatility early in the season.

Expect Carpenter in RF (with Engel) until Tatis returns. Cruz DH. If they see the benefit of Azocar, Dahl, and Schrock getting regular AB in case they are needed mid-season, might start with Batten and Dixon (Dixon being optioned for Tatis). Batten’s value is base-running (think ghost runner) and emergency defense INF/OF decently.

Without Tatis the Padres have Soto, Grisham and Engel as their starting OF, all LHH. I think Azocar has a good chance of making the team because his RHH will be a benefit.

Engel is a RHH, according to baseball reference. Dahl is LHH.
