Agree. Unless some of the FA pitchers have opt outs unless they make the major league roster out of ST, then you need to save those promotions to the 40 man for later in the very long season. Even though Tapia and Teheran have been good to very good, once you bring them up and they are effective, who goes down - not many of our pitchers have options left. Like what I've seen of Weathers but he's also given up 5 HRs and some very hard hit balls in ST. Therefore, I'm leaning toward one of the RHPs already sent down to El Paso, who could pitch more than 1 inning without too much trouble - Avila or Knehr.
As for the position player bench, Dahl has been cooling off lately but still thinks he makes the team sharing the OF platoon with Azocar. He'll need spot on the 40 man and that should be accomplished by Lopez being waived. I had been leaning toward Sullivan as the last man on the bench, but came away very impressed by the way Odor batted against deGrom and got his 2nd hit of the day against a LHP. Kim has some trouble against RHP at times, so Odor might even start at 2b during that 20 game stretch Tatis is out. I really did not expect anything out of Odor when we signed him so I'm completely surprised in his performance to date.
The OD bench would then be RH Campusano (or RH Nola), LH Carpenter (or RH Cruz), RH Azocar (or LH Dahl) and LH Odor (or less of a platoon RH Kim). If you have Dahl and Carpenter in the line-up against a RHP (German Marquez, for example), then there is no LH hitter on the bench so for that reason going with the hottest hitter ending ST in Odor. I know Odor is not the defensive stalwart Kim is but he should be okay in spot starts; also I think there was a reason Melvin put him in LF the other day. How does Odor get on the 40 man? Likely Batten gets DFA'd since Dixon has played a nice 3b and has more power when he does get a hit - also can play 1b and the OF corners. Also more likely Batten does not get claimed and can be outrighted to El Paso.
When Tatis comes back, it's going to depend on who played themself off the 26 man roster and whether we want to expose Dahl or Odor to waivers, since Azocar has an option remaining. It's a long season and hopefully our injuries are all short-term unlike Lux, Diaz and Hoskins and even shorter than Altuve - all key players for other World Series contending teams.

I think you guys are way too worried about 40 man moves and potentially losing some of these guys. On a team with World Series aspirations the priority should be on putting out the best team. They shouldn't let the possibility of losing someone like Ray Kerr stop them from carrying a Tapia or Lugo if that's who they think the best option is.

Not much of a 40 man issue … not all that concerned about DFA of Kerr, Cosgrove, Avila, Batten, Dixon, Baez (at least the least regarded of that group) to get a better option for the 26 man.
More focused on the 26 man roster. If we are just dealing with Musgrove, Suarez, Pomeranz, Engel, and Tatis out for 20 days then dealing with taking five players off the 26 man in late April … and having over 5 months to play … might want to consider moves that retain the max talent for the full season as opposed to losing some to waivers / FA.
So would lean towards adding non-roster players with minor league options … will probably need them again during the season.
Really the only two that create a “problem” would be Odor and Teheran … neither can be optioned and don’t have to accept a minor league assignment if clear waivers. If kept on the 26 man … very limited choices on who could be optioned.
From what I can tell, Dahl, Lopes, M.Lugo, Tapia all will have minor league options if added to the 40 man … so they all are good add candidates.

Not high on Odor being added. Given the last time he had a good season was maybe 5 years ago (since barely over a .200 hitter since). Betting that we are seeing a ST high that will fade against regular season pitching.
Then add he is basically a 2B … Padres have Kim, Cronenworth (L), and Carpenter (L) who will cover that and none of them will get DFA.
With Tatis and Engel out … would go with OF coverage with Azocar … adding Dahl (L who can cover all three OF positions and can be optioned) … then maybe just hold on to Dixon (who can play the INF/OF corners and can be optioned) until Tatis / Engel return. If Azocar / Dahl (L) share RF … that 13th position player will have very limited use.
The wild card is how comfortable the Padres’ are with Nola being able to take on a full workload. Sullivan (who can play some OF) still should be a viable option for that 13th position player … at least to start the season.

I wonder when we’ll find out on Nola. I’m assuming today? Scanlan had tweeted he was excited to see Nola was in todays lineup but then tweeted he was wrong.

Some roster moves just got reported. Lopez returned to the Rays. Teheran, Carlton, Lugo, Lopes, Rivas, Severino reassigned to minor league camp and Dixon optioned to El Paso.

With Engel and Tatis not around for opening day … and the optioning of Dixon, Lopes, and Severino ,,, looking good for Azocar, Dahl, and Odor to be on the roster. (Outside chance Sullivan sneaks in over one since he is on the roster).
Lopez back to the Rays opens one slot … so if it is both Dahl and Odor … need another (not a big issue). However, it would then be interesting when both Engel and Tatis return and the easiest would be optioning Azocar and Dahl (both have options).
Actually Odor … for never having played the OF … looked OK in his two appearances. Also would not rule out Engel being moved.

With camp breaking up after today's game and the season opening Thursday for the Padres and Friday for El Paso ... we should be seeing those rosters firm up tomorrow. Would expect a large number of releases of AAA types, some additional info on injuries to start the season, and a "grey area" of players who may hang on in extended ST as they sort out the AA roster (starting a week later).
By my estimate there are at least 25 (probably a few more) "excess" bodies ... mostly pitchers ... that are clustered in a AAA/AA levels. Should note that extended ST (ACL types) also have a large cadre of pitchers but can hold them for some time.
Will be a sad week for a lot of players.

For the last ST game the line-up is out (and frankly surprised so many starters):
Lugo getting the start as his final tune-up
Machado and Soto getting the day off
Kim at 3B (Croney at 2B, Carpenter at 1B)
Odor in LF (probably a very good sign he makes the 26 man roster)
Nola is catching.
