Roster cuts
Right-hander Anderson Espinoza was optioned to Double-A San Antonio on Friday, and the Padres made a handful of other moves on their second cut day of the spring. Righties Jordan Guerrero and Dauris Valdez and infielders Nick Tanielu, Pedro Florimón and Gosuke Katoh were reassigned to Minors camp.

Snell sure had a good day!  Kim looked good at SS ... nothing else stood out ...

Tingler implied that Grisham and Nola will start on the IL (probably the minimum time)  ... along with Lamet.

No one is talking about Adams' elbow or Guerra ... so I would expect to see them IL also (maybe longer term).

So, at least for the first week, Campusano, O'Grady, and Kim join Mateo on the bench most likely.

Pen may start out: Pomeranz - Pagan - Kela - Melancon - Stammen - Johnson - Hill - Altavilla - Williams. Skirts a DFA of Altavilla or Williams until Lamet returns sending Morejon to the pen. Might be easier to have them clear waivers (if the Padres care) with a DFA a week into the season after all initial rosters are set. However, would not rule out Weathers being kept as the 3rd LHRP and moving Altavilla or Williams now.

Until Grisham returns ... looks as though today's line-up may be the go to set at the start of the season:

  1. Tatis
  2. Cronenworth (L)
  3. Machado
  4. Hosmer (L)
  5. Pham ... in CF
  6. Myers
  7. Caratini (#)
  8. Profar (#) ... in LF

Appears Cronenworth's ST earned him the #2 spot over Profar. Somewhat concerned about Pham in CF defensively.

Should be only a week (first seven home games) IF they can do the IL retroactive for 3 days prior to the season start (still not sure on that). Then travel day before the road trip.

Remember, Weathers & all others optioned down now can't be "voluntarily" recalled (only for injury) for 10 days.  With 10 games in first 11 days, Johnson is REALLY up against it, and there's no true long man in that pen.  Think Weathers and/or Crismatt needs to be there for lentgth. ...  See 2021 season thread.

I can see Weathers being retained for length and being LH ... and probably just better than Altavilla or Williams now and clearly for the future.

If Johnson is healthy, he makes the team ... he just better than either Altavilla or Williams ... and he is on a guaranteed $2MM contract.

Johnson definitely "makes team"; just think he should be on 10-day vs. having he & Pom both injury limited right off the bat (no back to back days etc) on a compressed schedule.

Some of the intent of all those bullpen adds at deadline last year was to have depth for this exact eventuality:  If Taylor Williams give you 10 days on MLB roster & 3 appearances until Johnson is at full health, that's a lot of what he was there to do.  If Johnson exacerbates his injury &/or another 1-2 guys in pen goes down early but we've already DFA Williams & Altavilla, then what?

OK with this.  Would rather see Profar in CF.  Not sure what the rationale of Pham > Profar there is; nowhere near as athletic, seems way more likely to pull something or get hurt diving for a ball.

vs. LHP:  Maybe Pham -1, Tatis -2.  Cronenworth (or Kim/ Mateo) to 6th.  Would really prefer Myers-4 & drop Hosmer to 5 vs LHP; sets up strings of RH/LH though.  We'll see.  Lineup will vary more when healthier.

Nola likely > Caratini offensively, but it's subbing Profar 8th for Grisham 1st that REALLY weakens the lineup.

My goal for homestand is: 4-7, 1st 10 games: 6-4.  Anything beyond that is gravy.  Just hoping pitching esp SP good enough & enough hot bats in there to scratch out wins and avoid a major stumble out of gate till we get fully healthy pretty quickly.

Just have no idea where Johnson is with his injury ... has not pitched in 12 days. If "in question" ... agree the 10 day IL makes sense.

Does beg a companion question ... what do the Padres think of the of Altavilla and/or Williams right now (expecting them to be on the bubble when Strahm, Lamet, Johnson come off the IL)? Did any of the non-roster RP impress enough to earn an opening days spot over Altavilla / Williams? DFA them now ... add the non-roster arm ... option later but available for recall. Agree Crismatt could be one that fits that view ... I like Knehr.

Bottom line is who is the best RP option for the first 2-4 weeks ... and given how Altavilla / Williams performed in the spring and on the future bubble ... might not be them.
