Nola was catching in drills today and full bore ... so we will see but if Darvish is the opening day starter .. expect Caratini even if Nola is on the roster.
All the reports on Grisham is that he is passing all the benchmarks and is on target to get into games at some point this week .... but time will tell and we know hamstrings are tricky.
Add that Acee said Johnson had a bullpen session and Pomeranz will pitch in a game on Friday. No apparent set-backs yet.
Grisham was one of 5 batters in the 5 inning simulated game Paddack threw today, which is a great sign; lots of AB's/looks... but he didn't run!
He is the one making me nervous... can NOT risk losing him for an extended time by pushing a hammy just to make O.D. roster.
With Mateo & O'Grady doing well, why not carry that into season and IL Grisham? Or carry both on bench (5 man) & live with 8 RP's for a few days.... just don't overdo it with Grisham coming back too soon OR too heavy a workload off the bat.

I would just IL Grisham if he can’t run ... keep Mateo and O’Grady .... just not risk making the hamstring injury worse even from running to 1B if PHing.
That would keep the 9 man pen to start. I guess I am more concerned about the health / potential injury to the pitchers in those first games from “overuse” since few are getting major innings in ST so not going to push the SP deep into games and rolling out the pen every game to cover more innings right out of the blocks is high risk. Bigger risk in my mind that carrying a 5th bench position player ... especially if that player was Grisham who can’t run.
Have to consider that the reporters are suggesting that Kim is going to make the roster no matter what we think and they are “serious” about using him as an emergency LF option (apparently that athletic). Couple that with they seem OK with Pham or Profar in CF no matter what we think.

Quote from fenn68 on March 24, 2021, 6:33 amIf I interpreted Acee correctly ... the “alternate site” will be the Peoria Complex. Maybe they have a structure that will allow the “alternate squad” players who are eligible for ML call-up to be separated from the masses of MiLers who arrive in a little over a week. Or ... since all this is a movable target .... they have a comfort level with progress against the virus allowing for a more flexible mixing of players at the site.
ML camps have been almost perfect in avoiding COVID cases ... maybe those procedures can be effectively extended to a full minor league camp.

Quote from 84padres on March 25, 2021, 7:03 amGreat to see Lamet pitch last night. I was on pins and needles on every pitch , watching every movement after each pitch. Looked like almost all fastballs with a couple of offspeed pitches. Very good velocity and location for 1st appearance of the spring. Padres are doing the right thing in bringing him along slowly. IL him for the start of the year and maybe use him as an opener (2 or 3 innings ) for his 1st couple of starts. He is one of the most important players on the team because his outcomes are ace to injured. A healthy Lamet makes our starters in the top 2 in MLB

Quote from Jeremy Hill on March 25, 2021, 7:59 amInteresting to see him using his changeup again. With his velocity it could be a real weapon if he figures it out and could take some strain off his arm. At the same time I think we're just going to have to learn to live with the unease with him on the mound. His slider was literally the most dominant pitch in the game last year according to the analytics. Even if he scales back a bit he's going to throw it a lot. Just have to hope he holds up.

I will call it now (actually again) that Pads will bring him up for the 1st LAD series; possibly as an 'opener' 2-3 IP 1st outing.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on March 26, 2021, 11:07 amI think he just wanted to work on what he wanted to work on and didn't care about what the Rangers were doing. He wasn't making any effort to control the running game. I don't think it's an issue. Just a guy using a spring training game to tinker.
