Soto and his view of the Padres

Page 1 of 2Next

Interesting excerpt in the Athletic:

With the Yankees, Juan Soto’s historic bet on himself is about to pay off - The Athletic

He seems happier with New York, playing in a stadium ideally built for him to launch baseballs into the stands, for the richest franchise in baseball. He has moved on from his tumultuous time in San Diego, where he endured a lengthy slump, struggled to connect with teammates and coaches, and knew the Padres were never going to give him the contract he wanted.

Lets see if he can handle the NYY fans during his first slump in that uniform.

Sounds like Juan was playing for Juan?

Maybe the reason he didn't get on with his coaches and teammates is because he didn't want to invest his person with people he knew he'd not be with in the near future? Shitty reason to not ball out though ( granted, he put up great numbers the second half of last season)

In retrosoect, wish AJ had not bothered.

That's what I picked from reading this article. No love for the game from Juan, just a payday. His agent is very much in his ear more than teammates or coaches.

Probably a more in-depth analysis of Soto in WASH would help understand the evolution of attitude.

Most reports suggest he really loved being in WASH and Boras convinced him to not accept the offer to reach for a record contract. That is what Boras does. What is less reported is Soto's behavior in WASH. Have heard some suggest Soto has always been a guy that plays by his rules (not the coaches) and had the enabling of that attitude in WASH as the top dog player.

He arrives in SD ... does not really want to be here ... still influenced by Boras the mega contract and expects he will not get that big deal here ... then maybe most divisive is that he is NOT the top dog on a team with Machado (who knows he is the top dog), Bogaerts (has been mega star in BOST), and Tatis ... all with long term big money deals, probably not helping his integration in SD. Not sure those three were on the mindset to push Soto to be a team player and apparently the front office was split on how to handle his Soto focused approach to the team.

NY will be interesting ... Soto at this point must go to FA (Boras will push and NYY probably will not try to early extend) ... fans will really be on him if he is not delivering vs his hype IN THEIR MINDS and, at least speculated, that some of the Yankees (like Judge) will push him more than any of the SD contingent. Remember the NYY as an organization is not all that liberal ... consider the no facial hair mandate. If Soto is not listening to the manager, coaches ... wearing ear buds in hitters meeting because he did not want the input to conflict with his plan ... etc.

His FA next winter should be interesting given the price tag Boras will set ... few teams can (or want to go) that high ... and if this winter is a precursor to next ... long term / mega dollar deals will be harder to land (Ohtani / Yamamoto and LAD aside). Guessing his ego gets dented a bit ... although someone will still pay a lot to land him.

Or the first of his many atrocious plays in the OF.

If he turned down, what, $40 million a year from Washington,  what does an AAV look like for Soto in NY come 2025?

Considering he is only half the player Ohtani is ( if that!), $35 million would be reasonable.

Kind of puts Boras and Soto in a bit of a bind, no? With Juan being NOWHERE near the draw that Shohei is, who is going to offer more than half of what Ohtani earns? I know someone will be stupid and offer him ridiculous money but based on the current market, he'll be fortunate to get anywhere near the money Washington offered him.

The overall number will be close considering how much younger Soto is than Ohtani.

I still say that Soto gets about $600M, $40 per year for 15 years taking him to age 40.

My first question is which team(s) will be willing to commit to that type of contract?

LAD/NYM have mega payrolls already … although the METS may clear money sooner than LAD. Remember both teams will pay over a 100% penalty via the CBT so $40MM is really $80MM out of pocket. NYY? BOST? SF? … not sure who else will even try to play in that game.

Its a limited field for sure, and your mentioning of NYY, BOS, and SF are logical. I still wouldnt count out the NYM. And LAD seems to get to play with the CBT, so a small possibility.

But how about one out of LF so to speak, WAS? What if WAS wants to regain the fans love, Soto has said many times how much he loved it there, Corbin is coming off the books (except his deferment), and they only have a $63M commitment for 2025 according to spotrac........so WAS.......maybe.
