Social Injustice and Baseball
Quote from Brian Connelly on August 28, 2020, 12:22 pmJeremy, FANTASTIC post. I think it's hypocritical of relatively wealthy well off pro athletes NOT to stand up & speak out.
I have huge respect for the pro athletes who brought (granted, games w/o spectators, so no blowback from in-person fans) even the NBA playoffs to a standstill to get people to sit up & take notice that we collectively as a nation can't endure as a society when this stuff keeps happening. Less respect for Whit Merrifield saying "we're the 3 hour diversion".
Money talks. Pro athletes wield an enormous amount of power in our society. IF they're willing to risk their enormous incomes, they can really help effect positive change. Freaking racist "Redskins" disappeared in a few weeks with the wave of protest & change happening in society vs. Daniel Snyder 5? years ago dug his heels in & basically said "over my dead body will the name change". Imagine what the spectre of no NBA or NFL season could cause to happen!

I think the emotion you hear in many of the voices is a testament to the depth and prevalence of "issues". In other words, what's changed me the most in recent months is the testimonies by people otherwise very much like me (ex. same employer) who have been in the wrong place at the wrong time and had their face pushed into gravel by police officers for what they experience as "being black".
