Social Injustice and Baseball

Page 1 of 2Next

I thought long and hard about this and decided that this situation is important enough that we should have a place for it to be discussed.

If you want to discuss this topic and how it relates to Baseball in general and the Padres in particular....do it here.

Keeping in mind there will be “zero tolerance” for any racist comments or personal attacks.
If this thread remains empty I’ll just delete it but I wanted to provide a place for you to voice your opinion if you wish...as long as it is a civil discussion with respect to others who may have a differing opinion.

I like baseball.  I do not like social injustice. That pretty well sums up my thoughts.

You probably summed up most of our thoughts on the matter.

I think that if those policemen violated the law that they should be prosecuted to the fullest extent. But I think we need wait until all the facts are in before we make that decision.

Yes, I like sports. I do not like social injustice.

How does it affect San Diego?

When was the last time there was a police shooting that was over the top wrong in San Diego ?

Social injustice sucks but that had what to do with the Padres ?

What happened in Wisconsin sucks but that's not San Diego

I wanted the game

Apparently a few more games have been cancelled today.

Some of the teams who weren't able to boycott yesterday are doing so today.

While Im sure we all agree that social injustice has no place in todays world. And, as an American, I believe everyone has a right to free speech. The opinions, thoughts, political stances, etc, of athletes, actors, and other celebs can be expressed in many ways; interviews, through tweets, through blogs, and other avenues. So with that being said, the actual game that is supposed to be played is not the platform/time for the athlete's opinion on anything. The actual game is their job. I can not take the day off because something in the world is bothering me.

I get it, the athletes want to help. However, I agree with MrP's original statement last night, postponing a game does nothing to help any cause IMO.

The mere fact that this thread exists means that the postponement of yesterday's game has done something to help the cause of those who chose to postpone the game.

The Padres allowed their players to "take the day off" ... so the Padres' org joined the protest ... the Padres' org supports the protest ... and I'm glad they do.  My employer does also ... to the point where I'm confident that they would support me "taking a day off" if it would have the kind of impact that yesterday's game postponement is having (and probably even for much less impact).

It sounds like everyone here so far does not like social injustice ...

For me, that means I support the protests ... I want the change they are protesting for ... (maybe not ALL of the specifics that ALL of the protesters are protesting for ... but, in general, I'm talking about changes that reduce social injustice ... and I believe that's at the core of most of what the protesters want).

Specifically, I believe the majority of protesters want less "state-sanctioned violence and anti-Black racism" ... https://blacklivesmatter.com/what-we-believe/ ... and that's what I want also.  (Again, I don't know if I want ALL of the specifics that BLM wants and/or ALL of the protesters protesting in the name of BLM ... just saying that I want less "state-sanctioned violence and anti-Black racism" and I support peaceful, non-violent ways of bringing awareness to this issue ... such as boycotting a baseball or basketball game ... which I believe can and will lead to positive changes)

This article speaks to me about some key elements to this ... https://sports.yahoo.com/mookie-betts-humbled-dodgers-support-044943620.html

For the record ...

https://www.mlb.com/padres/news/mariners-padres-won-t-play-in-solidarity-with-protests

The Padres issued their own statement: “We understand the Mariners’ decision to postpone tonight’s game and we support the players’ efforts to use their platform to bring awareness to the very serious issue of racial injustice impacting our country today.”

First, when was the last time there was a police shooting that was over the top wrong in Kenosha or any of the other cities that they have happened in?

Second, why does that matter? It's not about individual incidents. It's about the systemic racism and social injustice that allows these types of events to occur time after time seemingly without consequence for the perpetrators. Systemic racism and social injustice are not regional issues. San Diego might be better than most cities, but we can't pretend these issues don't exist here just because we haven't had a blatantly wrong instance of police violence.

As for what it had to do with the Padres I think it was simply an expression of unity and solidarity. This generation of athletes has been more and more willing to use their platforms to highlight social causes. After seeing all of the stories shared throughout the sports world I would have been disappointed in them if they had done anything other than offer their full support when the Mariners let them know they wanted to boycott the game.

I think these issues have been ignored by our political leaders on both sides for far too long. It seems like we've reached a boiling point in America with people calling for change and refusing to back down. Athletes have become a big part of that. I think the fact that so many people are more upset about athletes protesting than they are about what they are protesting for says a lot about our country.
