Seattle Mariners at San Diego Padres: April 14-16

PreviousPage 2 of 3Next

Great comeback ... and it was accomplished with Marinaccio - Peralta - Jacob in relief. The main bullpen pieces were not needed and rested to be available for the next few games.

Just like Jeremy, my wife and I left after the top of the Padres order had batted in the bottom of the 8th and I told her we managed to jinx their winning streak.  When we got on the trolley, heard a loud eruption from the stadium which apparently was because of Sheets' double.  Padres fans then started following the game on their cell phones, as the Padres managed to stay alive, however, when it came down to 2 outs and Campusano up with an 0-2 count, everyone thought it was over.

Well, you guys know the rest and everyone in that trolley car was jumping up and down, screaming and hugging one another!  A great night for Padres fans even though some of us left a little early!  Had to watch Donny call the win after we got home on MLB.TV and it was marvelous!

WOW!

I'm sure everyone is wondering and no....I did not quite make it.

I gave up the ghost when we failed to score in the bottom of the 8th.

So was both happy and disappointed this morning at the same time.

What a game for the young Jackson Merrill.

Merrill magic is back?

First, he catches and robs a clear cut HR by JRod and then he caps it off with a walk off 2-run double.

What a night.

The Padres beat the Mariners the first two games with two of their best pitchers on the mound. If Buehler is on his game tonight, they should sweep.

GO PADRES!

While a sweep would be an awesome bonus, the goal has already been met. Win each series.

Thats the key to a WS trophy, win each series.

Up next, a quick roadie to ANA for 3. And Trout has been hot this week.

The Padres sweep the Mariners and home stand bringing the win streak to 8.

Bueler looked good through 5 innings and the BP held. Miller continues to be awesome.

Next, the Padres take the bus up I-5 to battle the Angels.

GO PADRES?

I'll make my usual comment about how dumb I think it is that not just the Padres, but all teams refuse to use their late inning guys to get out of jams earlier in games. I like Bradgley Rodriguez a lot. I have to think they would be better off flipping his usage with Jason Adam's on a night like tonight though. That was my one gripe. It's hard to be mad with how they've been playing. Another nice win to keep the streak going.

Well they did use Morejon early.

I would guess some of the logic on Rodriguez first may be looking at the opposition line-up / situation (might have been Adam if the game was on the line in that moment) and considering Adam is just back, giving him a clean inning might have factored in.

In this case ... the choices worked.

Buehler was effective .... his velocity sat in the 95 range throughout ... his command was good ... he displayed a wide range of pitches. 5 shutout innings before trouble in the 6th (given this pen) will win them a lot of games.

Also, like his intensity ... he was really unhappy getting pulled in the sixth (not sure if getting pulled or giving up those two hits was the issue) but stormed through the dugout not even acknowledging congrats from teammates and then violent threw his glove against the wall before storming into the clubhouse.

Last two starts have likely moved him to the top of the survivor list over Marquez and Waldron.

That's my point. The game was on the line in that moment. The Mariners had runners on the corners with no outs in a 3 run game with Julio Rodriguez at the plate. It's very unlikely that Adam is going to see a bigger situation later in the game. I would be willing to bet in the same scenario even an inning later it's Adam who comes into the game. He was the guy they went to late to get them out of jams in his first 2 appearances.

The choice really didn't work at all. Julio Rodriguez singled in a run. He got Naylor out and then got pulled after walking Arozarena to load the bases. Morejon was able to get out of it and they went on to win the game. That doesn't mean going with Bradgley Rodriguez was a smart or effective decision. Regardless of the results, it's the thought process that bothers me. Teams label guys as their "high leverage" options only to act like high leverage situations only exist in the late innings.
