46-52
Monday, July 21 - 3:40pm, TV: San Diego Cox 83
RHP Randy Vásquez(3-4, 3.80 ERA, 50 K, .242 BAA) vs RHP Eury Pérez(3-2, 3.18 ERA, 35 K, .202 BAA)Tuesday, July 22 - 3:40pm, TV: San Diego Cox 83
RHP Stephen Kolek(3-4, 4.24 ERA, 49 K, .260 BAA) vs RHP Edward Cabrera(3-4, 3.61 ERA, 86 K, .239 BAA)Wednesday, July 23 - 9:10am, TV: San Diego Cox 83
RHP Dylan Cease(3-9, 4.64 ERA, 139 K, .245 BAA) vs RHP Sandy Alcantara(4-9, 7.14 ERA, 73 K, .275 BAA)The Padres are riding high after taking the series from the Nats on 2 Grand Slams. I hope this means the Padres bats are coming alive. Now they head south to play the Marlins. I would not mind if the Padres left Miami with Stowers on the team. The Padres should take this series. A sweep would be sweet.
In the last 13 games, the Padres have gone from being 9 games back of the Dodgers to 3.5 games back.
Top NL West games: Dodgers(58-42) host Twins(48-51), Giants(52-48) at Braves(43-55)
GO PADRES!

A win is a win, Suarez needed to pitch anyway, but I prefer the blowouts

Quote from fenn68 on July 22, 2025, 5:14 amVasquez's pitching has to be driving the analytical guys crazy. His xFIP / SIERA are just purely bad (calculated ERA greater than 5) ... walks too many / strikeout too little.
Yet, he has a good actual ERA (mid-3s) and the Padres have won more games with him as a SP in 2025 than any one of the other SP. He makes all his starts and consistently gives 5-6 innings. Results on the field is what leads to wins vs projected results in a computer.
The analytical types are probably of the mind that Vasquez will not be able to sustain his on field performance and move to the poorer analytical level. IF the Padres believe that .... he should be a trade chip (maybe not right now) before that happens.
One observation that may lead to Vasquez's better on field work this season is how Shildt is handling Vasquez ... basically in close games he will not let him go through the opponent's line-up for a 3rd time. Must "know" he really declines at that point ... either his stuff regresses or opponents get more comfortable with this stuff. Yesterday pulled after 4.1 innings after giving up only 1 run and only 68 pitches.
Sort of a conflict of good and bad ... on a pitcher who is young and low cost ... must give (or will give) Preller some challenge on whether to keep going with him or moving him.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 22, 2025, 6:44 amLove what Vasquez has given us in '25 but he does feel like a guy who the wheels could fall off at any given moment.
Wouldn't mind if he was included in a deal if that's what it took to get a bat we need.
He may have more value to other teams than our prospects that haven't done it on this level.
Nett,Lowe,Baez, etc
Also wouldn't mind trading a major league reliever or even two if that's what it takes.
I feel like Bradgely,Pena and Neighbors are ready

I think the issue with Vasquez is that his stuff moves so much (I have heard Grant say this on broadcasts) that sometimes he misses his spot because it moves more or less that he is planning. Usually more.
He could stay this borderline 4/5 guy that goes 4.5-5 innings, or he could really figure things out and become a very good #2.
I am sure that is what they are discussing internally. Probably taking a lot of input from Niebla, on whether he is coachable, making progress in bullpens that hasnt translated to games, etc..
Worse thing would be to give up on this guy too early, and turns into a borderline #1 SP, strong #2 SP.

Quote from fenn68 on July 22, 2025, 12:56 pmWould think the Preller has to think about who he has to fill Vasquez' spot (either now or over the winter) vs who he gets back for Vasquez and will that player fill a greater hole on the roster. Probably in a playoff race (or next season intending to contend) the potential of Vasquez is secondary to building a balance roster.
For example if he thought Baez or Nett could step up and be as (or nearly as) effective as Vasquez ... but adding a strong ML hitter will be much better than the current corp in the line-up ... he likely makes a deal.

Quote from ultratvfan on July 22, 2025, 7:55 pmIf Bergert was not sent down, he would have pitch today. But, I would think he would be back for the Cardinal series.
As for today's game, the Padres had opportunities, but could not produce.
