Also concerned about the return of Tatis … even with optimistic reports that have been going for some time still appears weeks away (if at all).

I guess if the Padres believe they are in a strong spot to make the Playoffs (and have been playing hot over the past month) no need to push the time line for Tatis just to insure full recovery.

Sept 1 teams can add one pitcher and one position player … so that may be a convenient target date without disrupting the team roster.

It sounds like it's going to be more about pain management with Tatis. From what I've read he's going to need the off-season to fully recover. He can play on it without making it worse. I think you're right about our recent play buying him more time. I feel better about him coming back than Darvish.

Rays lead Dbacks 4-0 after 2 innings. I know early in the game, but hoping.

At this point I think Shildt should consider sending down and bring back up Alec Jacob to give him an opportunity to start.

Jacob has only started one game in his career back in 2022 with San Antonio and that might have been scheduled as a bullpen game.  He can give you more than 1 inning but not more than 2; also, not eligible to return until 8/22.  Reynolds was used by EP as a starter to see if they could find someplace where he could be effective.  He seems to be doing okay right now, but is likely on a very short leash given his history of lack of command.

If you are going to give anyone else in the minors a chance to start, other than Vasquez, they might consider rostering Omar Cruz and pairing him with Hoeing to get through 6-7 innings.  Would have to cut someone from the 40 man, but that still doesn't seem to be a problem.  Reynolds, in fact, may be the guy they send down if they bring up Cruz unless this doesn't happen until 1 Sep.

Dbacks lost 6-1. Rays owned Gallen. Now the Dodgers need to lose and Padres to win.

I see Jacob as a 1-2 inning guy at best. His funky delivery and low velocity likely only is effective if hitters don’t see it very much … so sets him up to be a bit of a situational RP coming in against the “right” hitters usually after a totally different look from the previous pitcher. That can be very useful if Niebla and Shildt manage around his limits.

As for a spot 6th starter … not likely at this point in the season with the playoffs on the line … they go with a pure rookie or someone who has not been working as a SP just for the potential to get innings and not burn the pen. So Vasquez / Brito have the inside track and Waldron holds on to #5.

However if it got down to adding a non-roster SP … and don’t really see anyone clearly pushing as ready … might opt for the one that they plan to put on the 40 man this winter anyway … anyone now is a gamble not matter the potential.

Shildt sat two of the Padres best hitters Arraez and Merrill. Why?

At some point players need a rest ... Freeland is a LHP and, based on history, beatable by the Padres ... and Solano has hit him well. Arraez and Merrill LHH and less effective vs LHP. Add that with Cease starting a good chance he will dominate and makes the offense less critical.

Give both a bit of a rest prior to the more challenging games vs the Mets.

Both are lefty hitters and Shildt thought it would be a good day to sit both Action Jackson and Arraez against the Rox LHSP Kyle Freeland.  So mainly rest against a lefty that is tough on lefty hitters, that is all.

Btw, the Cards defeated the Dog-ers, need to win tonight to gain a game on both the Snakes & Dog-ers!

Dodger lost. Padres has a good chance to beat the Rockies. Cease is pitching well.
