San Diego Padres at Tampa Bay Rays: Aug 29 - Sep 1

Shildt has left Vasquez in way too long. He has nothing his pitches. Shildt finally removes him after 9 runs. Now, the Padres have a 7 run deficit. I don't think Shildt has a winning attitude. The Padres are at risk of dropping to 6 games back.

The good news is that in theory because of the bunch of days off coming up until the end of the season they might not need a fifth starter anymore.

If I were to guess on his logic … Padres were well behind early (5-2 after two) … no long man in the pen so would have to run through a lot of RP which in turn would deplete an already bullpen for the next two games where may have a better shot at winning with Cease and Musgrove going. Might have been different if the Padres were winning or tied.

Vasquez was bad and became a sacrificial lamb. Good chance he is optioned after the game and another RP is recalled (Bachar, Cosgrove, or Waldron, ?) along with Peralta being added tomorrow. Padres can afford to go RP with the day off on Tuesday which will allow them to skip Vasquez’ next start and then the following start will work for Darvish.

And with Darvish returning in maybe 10 days … they will not need Vasquez and maybe allow Cease and King to skip a start for a “rest” or at least manipulate the rotation to give them an extra day or two between starts.

Glad to have Jacob back.

I like the way Reynolds has been pitching.  Overall, I rather have Reynolds throwing over Jacob.  I do like Jacob some.  Both will probably be in the Pads pen next year.

Agree on Reynolds … expect him back when he is eligible to be recalled. 47 pitches yesterday and 28 on the 28th probably had him sitting today and tomorrow so goes down for a fresh arm.

Jacob initially could be a good situational option with his orthodox delivery and good command … could baffle hitters until they figure him out.

Jacob was used well beyond his usual 1 or 2 innings, so basically took one for the team.  It seemed Shildt didn't want to use any high leverage pitchers after they got substantially behind, so everyone should be ready to try to get the series win if we get the good Cease and the offense finds their stroke against a fairly tough pitcher in Pepiot.  We're still in a good wild card position with a little easier schedule in September, rest-wise, for the team and expecting some significant adds to the roster over the next week or so.  Still, need to get Cease and King back on their game and hopefully, that will start with the former's start tomorrow.  Go Padres1

Padres drop to 6 games as did the Dbacks, who lost to the Dodgers.

Beautiful bunt my McCoy!

Good, tactical baseball.

Now the Ray's walk Arraez to load the bases for Profar......

Fundamental baseball- get 'em on, move 'em over, knock 'em in!

Go Pads!
