And....Peralta with a very unproductive AB there. Runners 1st and 2nd, no outs, down by 1, on the road,......gotta get those guys over....

I had the same thought. We are down by 1 with runners on 1, 2 with no outs... BUNT!

I'm guessing the guys who pitched out of the bullpen today were the only guys available. I'm also guessing they didn't want to count on any of them for more than an inning. You can't really count on Vasquez for more than 5. Jacob probably could have given you one, but they probably wanted someone who could give them some length if necessary. Edwards has pitched in parts of 10 seasons now and has typically been decent. He had been pretty good in the minors this year too. They have 6 more games before the next off day and they're going to have to cover some innings after Musgrove's start. It makes sense to bring up a fresh arm that might be able to give you some length given the situation. It didn't go how anyone would have liked today. I'm not mad at it though.

The Padres sweep the Pirates, win their 5th straight game, won 14 of their last 16 games, and their 6th straight series.  They are 2.5 games back of the Dodgers, who don't play today. Let's hope the Dbacks lose tonight to the Phillies.

Vasquez pitched better this game. Jacob has been solid and should not have been sent down. Edwards could not get anyone out.

Let's go and take care of the Marlins.

GO PADRES!

I have to disagree that Edwards has been decent in the minors this year, because of his record in the PCL.  I know it was in El Paso, but he gave up 12 walks in 17 innings to go along with 19 hits; I don't consider that decent.  Gillaspie had been good lately and Reynolds also.  Bachar was already on the 40 man and Omar Cruz was far more deserving from his recent performances to roster than Edwards.  Understand Edwards' history, but in baseball it is what have you done for me lately and Edwards was anything but dominant in El Paso.

I hope he reverts to his historical norm in the next couple of outings because we need an arm who can give us a little length when necessary.  I thought Hoeing could be the guy today, but obviously he wasn't able to go after more than 3 innings on Tuesday.  Perez in the wild card on Friday - if he can get close to replicating his last performance, the bullpen will be back in good shape.

1.85 ERA in AAA with the Cubs before we picked him up.

The Iowa Cubs were so impressed with Edwards that they released him in mid-June despite his 1.85 ERA.  He also had walked 15 in 24.1 innings and given up 20 hits by that time.

Fangraphs exposed that 1.85 ERA performance to a 4.10 FIP and a 5.17 expected FIP; these stats tell me the 1.85 ERA was compiled by dodging many bullets and pitching in luck not skill.   Sorry, I still am not a fan of Edwards but I do hope he does better the next time out because the team needs to keep moving ahead and he needs to show he still has something left.

I have heard it said that because Cease only pitch 1 inning and 14 pitches Tuesday that he might pitch this weekend against Miami. Also, Musgrove will probably pitch on Monday at Petco against the Pirates.

Pirates did not go easily in this series.  If the Dodgers think they can sit back and just go through the motions to win the series in LA, they might be surprised at how resilient the Pirates are.  My prediction is that the Pirates win at least one game and maybe the series in LA.

dodgers have to face Skenes.

Either he beats them which is great or they hit him and win and it helps Merrill.

Worst case scenario is Skenes pitches great and the dodgers still win.

Anything but that is good for us.

He wasn't released. He opted out to look for a better opportunity. He found it with us. It seems like someone in the organization must like him to bring him back again. I'm not a huge fan either. I just don't think he's getting enough credit for the work he's done. There probably is some luck involved this year. He's been pretty good the last 2 years. His career numbers are solid. I don't think it's fair to write him off after 1 outing. I also think the motivation for adding him is pretty clear. He's a short term fill-in that you're hoping can go multiple innings to help a taxed bullpen. What better options do we have for that role? Maybe Nabil Crismatt or Omar Cruz? I can't think of too many.
