Quote from Jeremy Hill on April 20, 2025, 2:53 pmI get that Shildt isn't ready to give up on Gurriel after 30 PAs, but there's no reason he should hit in front of Iglesias. Iglesias hit .402/.455/.544 in 101 PAs against lefties last year. He's started off this year even better with a .429/.467/.714 line off of them in 16 PAs in the early going. Gurriel is hitting .091/.167/.136 off of them in 24 early PAs and last hit them well in 2021. Even if they don't think Gurriel is cooked like the rest of us they should be able to see that Iglesias is clearly the far more productive batter. I might even consider moving him all the way up to the 2 hole against lefties.

Cant afford to lose anyone else…esp bats.
Anyone else think Gurriel is gone when Merrill is activated?

Quote from ultratvfan on April 20, 2025, 7:43 pmPadres prevent the sweep and remain atop of the NL West and best record in MLB.
Cease pitched his best game of the season to date, BP was solid and Suarez records his MLB leading 9th save.
Tatis is hot going 2 for 4 hitting a triple and recording his 8th HR of the a season, 2nd most in MLB.
Tomorrow, Vasquez opens the series in Detroit.
GO PADRES!

Quote from Jeremy Hill on April 20, 2025, 8:46 pmAcee says that Arraez made it back to the clubhouse after the game and was laughing and joking with guys. He's staying in Houston overnight, but could travel to Detroit in the morning if he's feeling good. That's really good news. I was fully expecting an IL stint. Maybe he'll be alright with just a day or 2 off.

Hope he is back in a couple of days but a chance ... given the injury ... he hits the 7 day concussion IL.

I think Joe goes first with the Merrill return since he has minor league options and has shown little in his time up. Gonzales is getting the playing time ahead of him but not doing much and he probably goes down with the return of Heyward (if he returns).
Gurriel might be more at risk when Cronenworth returns (assuming is after Merrill)

Quote from fenn68 on April 21, 2025, 2:09 amTime for a comment on Gavin Sheets who is starting off with an outstanding offensive run. 62 PA (still a bit small sample size) and a .890 OPS which is .200+ points above his career average.
He just is hitting the ball consistently hard and the opposition has made some excellent plays against him ... could have even better stats if lucky.
Still not playing against LHP ... where historically he was really bad ... gone just 2 for 8 (.708 OPS).
Wonder if working with Rodriguez has helped his approach ... never saw his work with the CWS but for a big guy with SD he is going opposite field at times and more line-drive than fly ball. If Rodriguez is really helping Sheets approach ... maybe that can extend to Sheets' approach to LHP and make him a more useful DH.
So far Sheets' performance has exceeded my expectations by a lot.

Quote from fenn68 on April 21, 2025, 2:23 amStill on Logan Gillaspie watch ... has pitched in only 1 game (April 6) since called-up ... two weeks without getting in a game (not sure he has even warmed up) is "unusual". Hard to see him effective if called upon after that long missing game action.
Games have not exactly lent themselves to the "mop-up" RP at any point and apparently Shildt / Niebla see him as nothing more. Clearly he is the first out if any pitcher returns from the IL.
If the 8th RP is just around for the "mop-up" role ... and in fairness to Gillaspie ... could (should) the Padres send him down and recall someone like Marinaccio for the next tour of duty. Gillaspie gets to pitch again and Marinaccio gets to work with Niebla while getting exposed to the ML and that could benefit later in the season?
