Page 1 of 4Next

15-4   8-10

Friday, April 18 - 5:10pm, TV: San Diego Cox 83
LHP Kyle Hart(2-0, 5.40 ERA, 8 K, .200 BAA) vs RHP Ryan Gusto(1-1, 3.00 ERA, 15 K, .205 BAA)

Saturday, April 19 - 4:10pm, TV: San Diego Cox 83, FS1
RHP Michael King(3-0, 2.42 ERA, 24 K, .195 BAA) vs RHP Hayden Wesneski(1-1, 4.00 ERA, 21 K, .156 BAA)

Sunday, April 20 - 4:10pm, TV: ESPN
RHP Dylan Cease(1-1, 6.74 ERA, 24 K, .286 BAA) vs LHP Framber Valdez(1-2, 4.91 ERA, 24 K, .238 BAA)

The best record Padres head back on the road again to Houston to face the Astros. In this series they will face only one lefty. Cease vs Valdez will be a rematch from game 3 last September in which Cease pitched 8.1 shutout innings.

All Astros hitters, except for two, have a .238 avg or lower and a .695 OPS or lower. Their two best hitters are Altuva (.311 avg, .788 OPS) and Meyers (.271 avg, .732 avg). If the Padres shuts down Altuva and Meyers, they would have a good chance to sweep. The Padres will be missing the Astros best pitcher, Hunter Brown.

After the Astros, the Padres head to Detroit to face the Tigers and then return home to play the Rays and the tough Giants in a 2-game series to end the month of April.

Top NL West Games: Giants(13-6) at Angels(9-9), Dodgers(14-6) at Rangers(12-7), Dbacks(12-7) at Cubs(12-9)

Astros still have some very potent bats in the line-up but undoubtedly miss Tucker and Bregman.  I think the games will be close but Padres have a very good chance to win the series.  GO PADRES!

Heyward scratched (sore knee) ... Gonzales starting in LF.

A good chance for Gonzales to show he can hit RHP and secure his ML role.

Worrisome on Heyward at his age (35) ... don't need another limiting (or IL) injury in the OF.

I hope nobody expected the Padres to win 'em all.

The Padres are still in first place with still the best record in MLB.
The Dodgers won moving up 1/2 game back, both the Dbacks lost and the Giants lost.

Hart did not look good. This is the second game in a row that he gave up 5 runs. He has pitched better at Petco Park. I am eagerly awaiting Darvish's return. Astros bottom of the lineup was tough.

The offense had chance to score big in the 2nd but runners blundered attempting a double steal. Kudos to Arraez on his 2-run HR and going 3 for 5. Gonzales played well offensively going 2 for 4 and 1 RBI.

IMO, Gonzales made a mistake throwing to second base in the 8th instead of home plate allowing a run. But, It did not make difference. Hader was tough.

King on the mound tomorrow. Let's win.
Go Padres!

On Gonzales throw ... he was too far out and moving to execute a throw to the plate ... probably should have hit the cutoff man (Bogaerts) but doubt that would have even created a play on Pena. He just flew past the stop sign.

Not sure how long Hart will keep his starting position ... remember his good start was against COLO. Darvish is likely a ways off (June?) since not yet rehabbing. Probably the same can be said about Waldron. Padres really don't have an obvious replacement bridge to Darvish ... maybe Kolek who is starting in EP. Doubt they go with an unproven option or try to convert a RP at this point of the season. Hart does have minor league options and the dollar commitment is low ($1MM in 2025 and a $500K buyout of a $5MM option in 2026).

Just continuing the Arraez watch on his hitting at PETCO. YTD:

AWAY: 33 PA ... .452 BA ... 211 wRC+

PETCO: 58 PA ... .204 PA ... 63 wRC+

Last year was also bad at PETCO ... if this profile continues the value of Arraez to the Padres very limited (probably nowhere near his current contract or justifying an extension). Hard to write this off as a slow start when he is delivering AWAY.

Would think Arraez (and his agent) will try to get a big payday as a FA and could (should) get that from a team that sees that AWAY performance and believes his HOME performance will be similar in their park.

I know this will never happen but instead of the usual platoon of players vs LHP and RHP ... maybe the Padres should platoon Arraez AWAY vs HOME?

Currently, I'm liking Bergert over Kolek.  When Bergert has everything in synch, he has sufficient velocity and enough of a repertoire to be successful.  I remember reading the problem is a consistent arm slot, which Niebla and staff can correct over time.  Bergert will probably get a start Sunday in Albuquerque and could possibly get "hit hard" because of the altitude but there still can be quality to the pitches he delivers.  I think his ceiling is to be as effective as Vasquez'.  The big arms are still in the lower minors with a chance Nett turns it on.

I was watching the game and if you look closely Bogey pointed for the throw to go to 2nd. Iglesias just went through the motions for a blind tag and the runner going home caught him completely by surprise hence the lollipop throw home. I don't put that run on Oscar at all nor did he miss the cut off.
