San Diego Padres at Colorado Rockies: May 9-11
Quote from WindsorUK on May 10, 2025, 8:30 amCan someone please explain to me how a pitcher gets credit for a save? I thought he had to at least face the potential tying run? Didn't Suarez inherit 2 runners( none scoring) and get the game ending double play, facing only 1 batter? Total Rockies on base/faced when RoSwo was in the game: 3. And we win by 4.....???

Quote from Randy Manese on May 10, 2025, 9:32 amCan't bring up Morgan or Bergert until near the end of the next homestand, so likely Reynolds survives the big league roster for another week unless he show much better than he did last night. Padres will hold onto Heyward for as long as they can for hit leadership, defense and an occasional hit; with the line-up we have we can afford to keep him awhile longer but certainly not the solution n LF as the Padres move forward.
Padres could trade Campy and a RP or two for a decent OF prospect, which most teams usually have several of; not sure which team needs that combo but as much as I like Campy, don't see him in the Padres' future with Shildt's emphasis on defense as the first priority of a catcher. I think Valenzuela has moved ahead of Campy as an interim back-up until Salas arrives; the fact that Salas is still in Arizona working on his swing is an indication they want to make sure he finds himself offensively before they stick him back in AA.

Quote from Randy Manese on May 10, 2025, 9:37 amWith regard to gaining a save, several criteria apply. The one last night was that the tying run was either at the plate or in the on-deck circle, which was the case. Seems like a stretch to get more pitchers more saves but that's the way the rules are written.

I remember Hoffy getting a couple of those saves too, there is another "type" of save no one gets anymore, the 3 innings to close the game, regardless of the run difference.

Quote from fenn68 on May 10, 2025, 10:26 amWhen it comes to the pitching staff ... will have to factor in:
- the return of Darvish which seems to be in maybe two weeks +/- ... along with the indication that they will work him up to full use by limiting early the number of pitches (e.g. 60) and build from there. That will suggest a "piggyback" option initially or heavier use of the pen.
- the schedule starting on May 30 and going to July 13 has only 3 off days that will put a strain on the pen (they have benefited for a lot of off days so far this season to get the RP their needed rests).
Unless Reynolds really infective in the ML in a mop-up role ... he probably lasts until Darvish's return. Kolek should last in the "piggyback" role as a multiple inning option.
Possible as that full schedule progresses and Darvish gets up to speed ... Padres try a 6 man rotation with Kolek back in the rotation ... a little less strain on the SP keeping them fresher for the second half.
As long as the Padres keep winning ... and they have the 3rd best winning percentage in MLB ... Preller has some flexibility and does not need to make a move until something falls in his lap.

Quote from fenn68 on May 10, 2025, 10:43 amI do think they need to make an upgrade move for LF ... probably nearer the trade deadline when other teams may be more willing to move a legit upgrade type player. RHH preferred. Note that the Padres LF sits about #28 in MLB for offense.
Agree that Campusano is a trade chip (just don't know his trade value) ... then it has to be a piece or two out of the RP/SP in the minors ... and we know Preller (for the right guy) will deal prospect we wish he wouldn't. Most likely the trade partner is a non-playoff contender.
If the add is a "rental" ... probably not a big cost in terms of prospects. Teams will be happy to get anyone and shed some payroll. Preller may be willing to pay "extra" for a player with two years control (or more) given nothing internally will be ready for 2026 and who knows on the FA market. We know Preller can surprise with a big deal. Doubt they go for an unproven prospect for a playoff stretch run and not sure they have the prospect to get that kind of deal done if they seek a top prospect.
This is the point when should expect Iglesias to go in the IL or get released.
If the Padres are still around the 3rd best record at the All-Star break, a major add for LF may look a worthwhile move giving the Padres their best shot for going to the WS. If so, maybe everyone prospect (other than Salas and DeVries) may be in play.

I have many friends in Northern Colorado, I go up there every August for a golf tournament, and I feel so bad for them. They are great baseball fans, and this Rox team is friggin BRUTAL!!
