Tuesday, April 21 - 5:40pm
RHP Randy Vasquez(1-0, 2.49 ERA, 25 K, .250 BAA) vs RHP Jimmy Herget(0-1, 1.64 ERA, 8 K, .216 BAA)Wednesday, April 22 - 5:40pm
RHP Walker Buehler(1-1, 4.58 ERA, 18 K, .242 BAA) vs RHP Tomoyuki Sugano(1-1, 3.92 ERA, 15 K, .272 BAA)Thursday, April 23 - 12:10pm
RHP Matt Waldron(0-1, 14.73 ERA, 4 K, .421 BAA) vs RHP Ryan Feltner(1-1, 6.00 ERA, 14 K, .278 BAA)After the Padres 8-game winning streak came to an end by the Angels, they have started a new one winning two games in a row and have won 14 of their last 17 games. They head to the tough Coors Field and have always had a hard time winning there. They did take two series from the Rockies last season, but have not swept the Rockies at Coors Field since September 2011. Last season they set a record at Coors Field beating the Rockies 21-0. The Rockies will look for payback after being swept by the Padres last week.
Vasquez, one of the Padres best pitchers opens the series. Buehler is coming off a solid outing going 5 shut out innings and pitched 6 shutout innings the game before that. The Padres will again be facing a tough Sugano. This will be a rematch between these two pitchers. Waldron worries me the most as he was beat up for 6 runs on 8 hits in his season debut. He is matched up with Feltner, who gave up 6 runs on 7 hits to the Padres last week.
Both Fermin and Merrill have been outstanding in their defense this last weekend. Fermin nailing runners trying to steal and Merrill continually robbing HRs. If Merrill keeps it up, he may win a gold glove.
NL West Matchups
Dodgers(16-6) at Giants(9-13)
Diamondbacks(13-9) host White Sox(8-14)GO PADRES!

Quote from Randy Manese on April 21, 2026, 7:04 amPadres hitters will have to keep disciplined and not try to hit every ball out of the park. If they can do that, should win another series even with our shaky rotation going against the Rockies who showed well at PETCO. Tough encore outing for Waldron at high altitude but if he can keep Colorado under 4 runs through 5 innings, think we have a chance to win that game. Padres do have a tough time winning here but got my fingers crossed that we can maintain our position within the division before the team goes to meet the Diamondbacks in Mexico City.

Quote from BoosterSD on April 21, 2026, 7:22 amWith this series in COL, and the next taking place in Mexico City, thats two series in a row at 5,000+ feet of elevation. While the hitters have to be drooling, the pitching staff really needs to focus on limiting walks to reduce the number of people on base when a hitter gets one out.

Quote from fenn68 on April 21, 2026, 8:46 amWonder what the pitcher usage strategy may be for the next two series.
The good is that it goes: off day (likely travelled to COLO) - 3 days in COLO - off day (likely travelled to Mexico City) - 2 days - return to PETCO. The off days at altitude just helps the adjustment and the progression from COLO to Mexico City lessens the impact on the body for that series.
Given that scenario ... do they use the off days to allow for full use of the pen in each series ... maybe cut starts short if the altitude wears down the starters? Or does the altitude impact the arms in a way that pitching back to back out of the pen is still a concern? Next Monday back to sea level vs the CUBS ... do they send the presumed starters for Monday / Tuesday back to SD early to acclimate to the altitude change?

Quote from Jeremy Hill on April 21, 2026, 9:18 amCoors always makes me a little nervous. As usual the Rockies have been much better at home (6-4) than on the road (3-10) in the early going. Hopefully it helps get some of the guys that are off to slow starts going without killing our pitching too much. As others have said going from Coors to Mexico City should give us a bit of an advantage in that series too.

Quote from ultratvfan on April 21, 2026, 11:29 amGame 1 looks like a BP game for the Rockies as relief pitcher Jimmy Herget takes the mound. The Padres scored 1 run off of him at Petco in his one inning. As a matter of fact, the Padres are the only team so far to score off him.

Quote from ultratvfan on April 21, 2026, 8:15 pmThe Padres outlasted Rockies pitching to win their third game in a row and they won it on a walk.
Vasquez was outstanding and the BP was strong. I just wonder why Stammen didn't bring in Miller.
Let's win tomorrow!

He explained it after the game. He wanted to give Miller an extra day after heavy usage in the last week or so. He doesn't want to over work anyone early and have it catch up to them late.
Vasquez was awesome. It was a rough day for the offense, but they scratched one across and that was all they needed. I think they said it was only the second time in franchise history that the Padres have won 1-0 at Coors.
