Add that the Padres have been having recent success by hitting FB consistently ... Cantillo really does not have a FB and was just locating curves / change-ups and that probably threw the hitters off (shouldn't but did). Stammen said they observed that on Friday Cleveland had Williams altering his mix to try to do similar (did not work as he still used his FB) and will be interested to see what Bibee does today. They will try to plan in that event.
As for Cantillo ... like him ... but maybe is a #3-4 SP at the top ... he must have his command to be successful with this pitch mix.

6 shutout innings by Mize ... exactly what they wanted in the trade.
Padres had a few chances to extend their lead and take some pressure off but could not get the key hit.
Add a great key catch by Bowen that may have changed the flow of that inning and the game. Also made a great catch on his own mis-ready then recovery. Kid can't hit but can really field and run ... guess that is why he is on the 26 man.

I was hoping for a sweep. But, I am happy the Padres took the series. Dodgers, Cubs and Dbacks all lost. The Phillies won.
The Padres are in a two way tie with the Phillies for the 2nd and 3rd wild card spots. They gained a game on the Cubs and now are 5 back. They also gained on the Dodgers moving them up to 7 games back. They gained 8 games on the Dodgers in 22 days.
Mize was outstanding going 6 scoreless inning. Just what the Padres need.
Padres hit 4 HRs by Rengifo, Sheets, Bowen, and Cronenworth.
It's on to New York to play the Mets.

Are you happy with the trade for Mize now Windsor? You were very upset after his first start, but he was out of routine and Mize is very much about not having his regular routine interrupted. I like the trade for Mize especially, he is a very solid starter. As Mud has said, he "throws a very heavy ball." We need Robbie Ray to start pitching well now also.

Making the playoffs and having a chance for more should be the objective. So far with 37 games remaining the Padres have a playoff slot.
Mize/Ray don't have to be too good to be better than the alternative starters (if the alternatives were healthy): Canning (6.50 ERA); Marquez (5.26); Waldron (7.16); Sears (4.68); Pivetta (4.50); Giolito (5.16).
Mize with DET had a 2.70 ERA ... Ray with SF had a 3.08 ERA.
In a pennant race where one or two more wins over the two months post trade deadline looks to be the deciding margin ... about 20 starts by Mize/Ray clearly increases the odds of more wins than the alternatives. On average giving up 2 runs LESS than the alternatives (plus going deeper) is a huge plus taking pressure off both the offense and bullpen.
Then consider that in the past 30 days Buehler (5 starts / 25.1 innings) has a 3.20 ERA and Vasquez (7 appearance / 27 innings ... starts and bulk) has a 3.00 ERA. A starting rotation of King, Mize, Ray, Vasquez, Buehler gives them the best chance of getting those deciding wins over the last 37 games.
