San Diego Padres at Cleveland Guardians: Aug. 14-16
Quote from fenn68 on August 14, 2026, 7:01 pmWhew! Rodriguez was scary tonight but got the save.
Morejon and Miller "saved" for the rest of the series ... so that is good given the win.

The Cleveland line-up is stacked with LHH/switch hitters ... think only one RHH ... so maybe an "opener" strategy using a LHP in Peralta. Surprised it was not Hart but maybe he comes in later.

Cantillo had not been pitching well lately, but the revenge factor came into play again against us. We also struggle mightily the first time we see a pitcher. Ugh!

Quote from fenn68 on August 16, 2026, 7:12 amUnderstand that I have not been a fan of Machado ... respect his past stats but just don't like watching him and think he not delivering the value for the contract. Now 2026 (at age 34) is loosing any plus from his offensive production.
What triggered this commentary was yesterday in the 1st inning ... Manny the #3 hitter ... comes up with runners on 1st/3rd and no out ... hit (or even a productive out) would keep the inning going but hits into a weak double play. That seemed the Manny of 2026 ... not impactful in key situations. A different top of the 1st could have altered the flow of the rest of the game.
Manny always says he will get his stats by the end of the season ... probably will in HR/RBI ... but his overall offense over the course of the season is not helping the Padres win ... wildly inconsistent and the depths are deeper than ever. Consider:
275/335/482 ... 121 wRC+ ...17.7%K ... Career
213/294/410 ... 95 wRC+ ... 21.8%K ... 2026
Looking at wRC+ by month:
Apr ... May ... Jun ... Jul ... Aug ... Sep
124 ... 111 ..... 130 .... 135 ... 120 ... 107 (Career)
101 ... 45 ...... 110 ..... 151 ... 45 ... --- (2026)
Not the profile needed from a #3 hitter on a contender. Those two months of 45 wRC+ are shockingly bad for Machado (or any regular). Add that SEP has been his worst month of his career ... worried. Could this be the cliff year of performance for Manny were his performance fades ... 7 more years at $39MM per is going to be very very frustrating.
