Quote from Henry Silvestre on September 9, 2022, 10:27 amSo we need to run a lot in 2023.. Bait the P to throw over or step off 2 times..them basically the runner can go before the wind up cause P needs to come to the plate if he goes to 2B or 1B or steps off =Balk and player takes 2B... Tatis going to steal 100 bases

Could Snelling + Campy + Mears = Murphy?
Or Tyler Stephenson?
A's don't need a C back ..so could a 3 way with Marlins (Laureano CF (A's) + Campy to Miami).. Snelling + Mears+ 2 or 3 top Miami specs to A's type deal??

When are you going to realize its not the catcher. SD SP are too slow going to the plate. Johnny Bench could not throw out runners with SD pitching staff.

Quote from MrPadre19 on September 9, 2022, 12:04 pmI don't think I like the pitch clock rule with runners on base.
The pitcher shouldn't be limited in his ability to hold a runner on or to give his catcher a chance.
Imagine in tight games late in the season or the playoffs when the pitcher can't even throw over a 3rd time with a good base stealer on first.
He can take a huge lead(yes he can still throw over but if he doesn't get him he's awarded 2b) and basically he's handed 2b anyway.
Too much for me
I like the larger base(won't even be noticeable) and the shift change....need more offense.

Quote from fenn68 on September 9, 2022, 12:40 pmThink I will be more fascinated by the pitch clock … 15 sec with no one on base and 18 with players on base. That impacts every pitcher every pitch … have no idea who can adapt and who can’t (still be effective). Not sure any of the Padres pitchers make that standard now (at least consistently) … maybe Crismatt.
Think the Padres SP … with men on base are averaging between 25-27 sec … getting that consistently to 18 sec will effect them and that new pace may wear on them over the course of a game. Of course, same impact on every team … so, who can adapt effectively and who cannot?
Will this change how GM look at their pitchers and other pitching trade / FA targets … somehow guessing how they can / or cannot change in an effective manner.
Also, the hitters must be ready in the batter’s box with 8 sec to go and can only have one timeout per AB. Bet there are some hitters that will have a problem with that … those guys who have for years stepped out after every pitch … adjusted everything on his body … stepped in … called a time out … and repeated as a routine every AB … remember Mike Hargrove.

I'm guessing that you did not realize that Jorge Alfaro has the 3rd fastest average pop time this year tied with, you guessed it, Sean Murphy.
We do not need Murphy and I seriously doubt we trade high upside pitching, which we desperately need, for him.

On the other hand, Tatis on 1B should cause havoc on the opponents. Also, look at catchers doing more of throwing behind the runner to 1B in their lead-offs are too large.
In the minors … base stealing when up marginally … did not become rampant. Maybe, in part, because organizations have been emphasizing big hitters vs speed types. Maybe, in part, the quicker delivery to the plate has modified those slow to the plate guys which in turn takes a bit away from the jump.
Not sure with the rules helping base stealing whether teams will move to valuing more athletic base stealers over sluggers? Maybe adding the rules eliminating the shift … thus requiring the INF to have more defensive range to be effective also contributes to moving to more athletic INF (and concede a bit of the bat)?
I could see some 2B whose defensive limitations are hidden in the shift to have their bats in the line-up being phase out and more speedy / rangy 2B emerge. With Kim / Cronenworth probably better than most teams defensively without the shift.

Most seem to attribute the SB issue to the pitchers being very slow to the plate … lot of “excess” movement”.
Now I would take Murphy to improve offense / defense out of the catcher position … but not go nuts in making a deal (he does have 3 years control and in Arb 1 … so high trade value at a premium position). Alfaro would be a good pairing but he is a FA after 2023.
My guess the Padres would have to lead with Merrill if they wanted a deal. Probably not worth it.

Tatis going to steal 100 bases
Actually if the runner on first takes off for second base then the pitcher can in fact step off and throw to second base ahead of the runner because he is attempting to make a play just as the runner is attempting to steal a base....the throwing to a unoccupied base does not constitute a balk in this instance....rule 602 in the rule book and this new rule cannot take away from already established rules of the game unless MLB were to strike rule 602 completely......in high school the same rule was 805
Case book example.....runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs and a 3-2 count on the batter...pitcher starts his motion in the stretch position and the runner on 2nd base breaks for 3b....the pitcher doesn't even need to disengage from the rubber....he can just throw it straight to 3b even though it's unoccupied and the advancing runner can be tagged out and it is NOT a balk because the pitcher can throw to an unoccupied base attempting to make a baseball play......caught stealing.
Called that very play many times over the years coaching and it always worked.....it's in the rule book
