Rule 5 draft

PreviousPage 4 of 6Next

Padres full 40 now.  The addition of O' Grady shrinks chance Pads make a pick even further.  Interestingly, the only other 2 teams full 40-man are Tigers & Dbacks near top with #3 & #6 picks in R5 draft.

Teams  have to have an open spot when they make the pick, but I can never can remember if you can DFA a guy "right then" to open a spot.  If so, 8? 10? 12? teams would have made a pick by the time Pads spot rolls around... could do Wingenter DFA at that point.

Or could still do the Guerra for R5 pick trade.  A trade for a non roster prospect would be more flexible/better, but think his trade value might be highest viewed "as" a R5 pick alternative.  Once 4-6 teams pick a RP in R5, they'd be less inclined to trade for Guerra later even if they still have room on their 40-man.

Good question as to the timing of opening a slot on the 40. I think, and not with confidence, that the slot has to be open before the pick (not sure how long before but probably not a wait until I see who is there).

More normal is “asking” a team select the player you want then trade for that selection either with a rostered player or after a DFA clears a spot.

So PITT could select player X and then deal him to the Padres for .... hypothetically Williams. OR for someone like Nix and the Padres DFA Williams.

More normal is “asking” a team select the player you want then trade for that selection either with a rostered player OR $$$ or after a DFA clears a spot.   ... the trade "Guerra" (or ?) as > other R5 options available idea.  But $$ might hold appeal this year; basically spending more for the prospect than the R5 $100K.  "Found $" to trading team if they weren't going to select anyone anyway.

So PITT could select player X and then deal him to the Padres for .... hypothetically Williams. OR for someone like Nix and the Padres DFA Williams.   ?  "Pitt" could just select Nix in R5...  risk another team selecting the guy they want (if he is an eligible for R5 guy)

Valid point there are "other" avenues for a team to make a pick for us.  Other rostered player besides Guerra or $ being the most obvious.

If $ (or a non-rostered player; could see a team preferring to get one of our R5 eligible guys AFTER R5 --save $100k, roster spot, and avoid the R5 restrictions on the player), the Pads have the DFA in hand to do it IMO... Wingenter.

Pads would exchange $ or non-protected Minors prospect for the guy they want (let's just say "Buddy Reed"), AND increase their (already likely) chance of retaining Wingenter by Outright to Minors; due to DFA him AFTER Rule 5 draft vs before.

Not a ton out there Googling "top rule 5 prospects"...

CBS Sports lists Lake Bachar as 1 of 17  names.  Bleacher Report lists Buddy Reed... as 1 of 3 at end of "how R5 works" article.

Well they've got some atrocious background music before the streamed R5 draft via conference call...

Updated rosters, only the Blue Jays & Us have full 40-man.

MLB.com highlighted 13 prospects including Pads' Jordan Guerrero... and Buddy Reed.   Reed clearly the "layperson's choice" as a hot pick.  That being said, the A's only have 35 guys on their roster, so it sure looks like they could have protected him if they wanted.

ML Phase done .... Padres lose no prospects.

18 players taken (as usual mainly pitchers) ...

MLB phase over.  No Padres prospects chosen.

18 selections total.  15 P, 2 OF (not Buddy Reed), 1 SS.

Baltimore & Oakland each made 2 Rule 5 picks.

NYY lose 3 prospects.  LAD (P's Brett Degauss & Jordan Sheffield), Minnesota, Cleveland, & Baltimore all lose 2 prospects.

Oddly more interested in the minor league phase ... not expecting quality but Padres have a lot of open position player slots for AAA to A+ and this may be a vehicle to put some options in play vs. signing minor league FA.

I thought we would lose 1 at least.

Looks like the Padres lost 3 in the minor league phase (players not on on the AAA roster):

Carrasco ... RHP who was in short season I think

Feliz ... RHP who also was a short season / low A type

Pozo ... C who I think they just signed as a minor league FA for the lower levels

Basically no big thing.

====

Coming in are:

Yorman Rodriguez ... C/1B ... probably in low A

Ben Ruta .... LHH OF ... probably ticketed for AA (maybe AAA) decent in AA with some speed

Basically no big thing
