Quote from WindsorUK on May 22, 2025, 3:33 amGod, I really disliked that trade when it happened. And I dislike it even more today.
Abrams, Gore, Wood, now Hassell. When does Susana get the call???
Michael King and Dylan Cease are what we have to show for that deal, correct?
Hmmm.....obviously good pitchers but I'm thinking the 3, now 4( and possibly 5?)guys traded out would be worth having instead of?
One to ponder....
Definitely keep an eye on their careers.

No, Brito was also part of the deal from NYY. And dont forget the production from Higgo at C last season. In reality its not a bad trade. Vasquez is performing similar to Gore, and has two more years of control than Gore. Abrams would have to been willing to change spots to stay in SD. Wood will probably be missed the most, jury is still out on Hassell to be honest.
Most of you on here just fall in love with our prospects and get buyers remorse when you see them do something for another team in the MLs.

Quote from fenn68 on May 22, 2025, 8:07 amNo King ... no Cease ... no Vasquez ... no Musgrove ... no Darvish ... not sure Wood, Gore, Abrams, and Hassell would put the Padres in a better place this year (or last year). A team with basically no pitching staff has a problem.
Did not like the Soto trade ... primarily because was not a fan of Soto so the price (in prospects) was too much.
A shot at winning immediately before Machado, Bogaerts, Cronenworth, Darvish, Musgrove get too old to perform at their All-Star levels ...

I guess what I meant when I said " what we have to show", is right now. I forgot Vasquez but Higgy is no longer here, Brito out for the foreseeable future, and of course Soto is long gone.
It just seemed too high a price for what was a 1 and a half year rental( did anyone really think we were going to offer more than the $400 million to resign Soto?)
Obtaining Darvish and Musgrove didn't cost that amount of capital. And because we had no near term help in MiLB, Preller had to go out and sign Bogaerts for money that could have been spent on aforementioned pitching.
Again, not a fan of the 4 or 5 for 1 type deals. At some point you need to develop your own players to balance out payroll ( unfortunately, we can't spend like LA) or you end up where we are- struggling to produce because half our line up is made up of castoffs.
I'll continue following former farmhands and hope they succeed.

Quote from MrPadre19 on May 22, 2025, 5:03 pmJust to clarify…..It was actually for 2-1/2 years of Soto.
We just chose to trade him after 1-1/2 for a better return.

Quote from WindsorUK on May 22, 2025, 5:55 pmCorrect but there was just no way we were going to get that extra year of service so in reality, he was here a season and half - from the beginning.

The Soto deal was made to try to make a World Series run before Peter Siedler passed. I also didn't like the deal when it happened, considering what we gave up to get Soto. It was unfortunate, but I understand the thought process in trying to get to the WS before PS passed.

While its understandable to desire some of these young prospects back in the SD fold, at least we had an owner that was willing to spend money and go for it all!!
Just look in our division at the Rockies. That owner has money, refuses to spend it, doesnt allow good baseball trades to build for the future, and doesnt even put a good product on the field.
I'll take our situation here in SD, miss some prospects, but relish in the fact that for what, the last four seasons, we had a team that had a real chance to make the playoffs and do some damage in those playoffs.
