Philadelphia Phillies at San Diego Padres: July 11-13
Quote from WindsorUK on July 12, 2025, 2:13 pmOkay...I'm bored....how about Merrill....don't re-act just yet....moves to the 9 hole?
He's obviously pressing( last nights 3 walks noted), Schildt has already moved him way down, and hitting in front of FTJ just might get him some pitches to swing at?
Gives us the L/R match up, speed on the bases in front of Nando, and the kid can go out there and play free( zero expectations from the 9 hole)
Schildt has swapped the line up around a lot lately. What harm could it do? With no obvious help on the way, worth trying something totally drastic, no?

Since optioning Bergert requires a 15 day absence ... his "start" will come up while optioned ... maybe we see Kolek back for that start ... doubt it will be King yet and hope it is not Waldron.

This move makes no sense. I believe that the Padres will need a 5th starter as they will open post ASB with 13 straight games--first 10 on the road. If Bergert can't be back after 15 days, then he will not return until the 3rd game against the Cardinals in St. Louis on July 26th.
Now on the other hand, King might be back and Cease traded. Then that would be different. If player were to be traded, such as Cease, then Bergert can be recalled sooner than 15 days.
Actually if a RP gets traded, they can recall Bergert ... a pitcher is a pitcher. Watch your back Jacob or Hoeing or ???
The targeted start date is the 22nd vs. MIA as they reset the rotation ... that is the 5th start after the break. A lot of time for Preller to make moves ... or if the pen is rested go with a bullpen day. Otherwise Kolek is likely but would not rule out Hart (after his relief work the other day) or Waldron (since the Padres seem to like him) ... think all can be called up for that day. Might have to do with how they perceive the match-up vs MIA.

Maybe hitting 6th is a good idea?

Quote from Jeremy Hill on July 12, 2025, 6:32 pmSeems like Merrill figured something out at the plate. Getting him hot again will do more than any trade we might make.

If nothing else should put him in a better mind set during the All-Star break. Being on a deep slump then thinking about it for four days usually is not a good thing.

Quote from ultratvfan on July 12, 2025, 7:36 pmThe Padres beat Wheeler and take the series from the Phillies for the first time since 2022 and the first time at home since 2018. If they sweep them tomorrow it will be the first sweep of the Phillies since they did it in August 2017.
Darvish did not look good today and the BP held.
Merrill came alive today with 2 HR and 3 RBI. Let's hope he keeps it going.Pivetta on the mound tomorrow.
It' s time to bring out the brooms and take care of Sanchez.
GO PADRES!

The fact that Darvish was there in the fifth inning, and almost got out of It, It Is very encouraging IMHO.

If that bases loaded ground ball by Sosa is two feet to the left or the right….they don’t score and we would be praising Yu for 5 really solid innings.
Two feet…..that’s baseball
