The Padres have gained 4.5 games on the Dodgers in the last 7 games. The Phillies come to town in the final series before the All-Star break. The Padres unfortunately draw their toughest pitchers and two are LHPs. The Padres lost 2 of 3 last week in Philadelphia. Now, they need to turn it around on their home turf. The last time they won a series from the Phillies was in 2022 in Phildelphia.The last time they won a series from the Phillies at home was in 2018.
Bergert is expected to be activated and pitch on Friday barring any setbacks. He has pitched 2 shutouts in his last 5 starts. I am guessing that Morgan or Nunez would likely be the corresponding move.
Darvish is coming of his season debut allowing only 2 ER in 3.2 IP.
Pivetta has turned out to be one of the Padres best pitchers. He is coming off a solid start and has allowed only 1 run in his last 3 starts.
Merrill is in a slump and needs to break out of it. He is 0-17 in the last 5 games. But, his defense has been outstanding. The offense needs to produce with RISP, especially in based loaded situations.
Top NL West games: Dodgers(56-38) at Giants(51-43), Dbacks(46-48) at Angels(45-48)
I would like to see the Padres go into the All-Star break with a positive note by winning this series.

The Padres beat the Phillies!
Welcome back Ryan Bergert, who gave up only 2 runs in 4.2 IP.
The BP held and Suarez earns hi MLB leading 28th save.
Kudos to Machado hitting his 17th HR.
Darvish on the mound tomorrow.

Great team victory!
Now let's see Darvish come out tomorrow night and give us 5 solid.
Bats still aren't great but they've been good enough.....just. Be nice to see the boys run up a few crooked innings before break. Get 'em some swagger going into half 2.

Oh....and props to Bogaerts! He's been absolute garbage the first 2 years but he's actually showed life in the past month. Keep it up!

Dodgers lost their 7th game in a row. Padres move up to 4.5 games behind the Dodgers. The reamin in 3rd place behind the Giants, but only by a half a game.

What concerns me about tonight is that we’ve relied heavily on the four horsemen, making me think that they may all be unavailable. If that’s the case, combined with the fact that Yu is making only his second start, it will be hard to remain optimistic in a game in which we face Wheeler.

Padres option Bergert ... recall Jacob for extra RP over the next two games. Guess the re-sort post All Star game.
Since optioning Bergert requires a 15 day absence ... his "start" will come up while optioned ... maybe we see Kolek back for that start ... doubt it will be King yet and hope it is not Waldron.

This move makes no sense. I believe that the Padres will need a 5th starter as they will open post ASB with 13 straight games--first 10 on the road. If Bergert can't be back after 15 days, then he will not return until the 3rd game against the Cardinals in St. Louis on July 26th.
Now on the other hand, King might be back and Cease traded. Then that would be different. If player were to be traded, such as Cease, then Bergert can be recalled sooner than 15 days.

It would be nice to see anyone other Machado, Sheets, Arraez, or Tatis have a monster game!
I watched Wheeler pitch against us last week, and I've gotta say Suarez's stuff looked more electric. Wheeler is obviously very good but I think seeing him twice in such short time will play to our guys advantage.
