26-27     31-21

Monday, May 25 - 3:40pm
LHP Jesus Luzardo(3-4, 4.85 ERA, 66 K, .270 BAA) vs RHP Griffin Canning(0-2, 9.00 ERA, 19 K, .292 BAA)

Tuesday, May 26 - 6:40pm
RHP Aaron Nola(2-4, 6.04 ERA, 51 K, .299 BAA) vs RHP Randy Vasquez(4-2, 2.31 ERA, 59 K, .191 BAA)

Wednesday, May 27 - 1:10pm
LHP Cristopher Sanchez(5-2, 1.62 ERA, 86 K, .242 BAA) vs Walker Buehler(3-2, 5.05 ERA, 41 K, .258 BAA)

The Padres have always had a hard time beating the Phillies, but are fortunate not to have to face both Sanchez and Wheeler. On paper it looks like the Padres will have a chance in game 2 with Vasquez on the mound. However, both Luzardo and Nola are struggling. Although I am worried about Canning against the Phillies. But, he is going up against Luzardo. So maybe that is a plus if the Padres hit and score.

The Phillies Harper has always been a thorn in the Padres side and despite Schwarber's .226 avg, he leads his club with 20 HR. Marsh is the Phillies most dangerous hitter with a .320 avg.

The Padres are lacking offense, although France has done a great job offensively and defensively has a .279 avg, 2nd in the club and leads the club with a .836 OPS. Andujar leads the club with a .280 avg and Gavin Sheets leads the club with 9 HR.

NL West Matchups

GO PADRES!

Game 1 Lineup

1. Tatis 2B

2. Andujar DH

3. Bogaerts SS

4. Machado 3B

5. Merrill CF

6. Castellanos

7. France 1B

8. Laureano LF

9. Duran C

Canning P

Bases loaded, no one out....Machado-K, Merrill-K.....are you kidding me???

If we lose this game, I'd expect to see some drastic changes ( read: bench the stiffs that aren't producing)

I watched the first inning while I was eating breakfast in Japan. The Phillies really tried to gift them at least 1 run and they wouldn't take it. Merrill's AB especially was atrocious. Pretty sad. Hopefully they do better the rest of the way.

This level of offensive ineptitude is astounding.I seriously expected one of the best offenses we’ve ever had this year with such a deep lineup.

Is anyone else starting to think that Merrill's contract extension was a huge mistake? He was good, but not great last year, and this year he is completely awful.

Another wasted solid pitching.

Both Machado and Merrill have below .200 avg. Stammen needs to sit them for a few days. It worked for Ohtani.

France now leads the club with .289 avg and currently the best hitter on the team.

Here is my idea for a temporary lineup:

1. Tatis 2B - .253 avg

2. Andujar 3B -.281 avg

3. Sheets DH - .253 avd

4. France 1B - .289 avg

5. Bogaerts SS - .243 avg

6. Laureano LF - .208 avg

7. Johnson -CF - .188 avg

8. Castellanos RF - .183 avg

9. Fermin or Duran

If Merrill's was a huge mistake ... Manny's is a disaster. Tatis' is not bargain either and no one likes Cronenworth's. Bogaert's seems the best of the lot ... and that is not saying much.

Almost at the 1/3rd point in the season ... and the hyped return to hitting like the back of their baseball card seems to be a pipe dream. Maybe it still happens but let us hope not too little too late.

Yet, still in a playoff slot due to good pithing and some late inning heroics early in the season ... that will not last through the full season and if the bats do not come around ... could be a long summer.

Yeah, I'm all for giving Laureano some starts in CF, Sheets in LF, Castellanos in RF.

Andujar and France deserve consistent AB's as well so happy for them to stay at DH/3B and 1B

May has been worst than their struggles they had in March/April, consider:

235 (21st) / 309 (26th) / 384 (16th) .... March/April

199 (30th) / 273 (30th) / 341 (27th) ... May

Manny is the worst of the core:

222/331/384 ... March/April

114/191/278 ... May

I clearly was expecting a very strong offense given the histories of the core ... and worried about the fringe. It is the fringe that is carrying the offense (such as it is).
