Pham vs Profar

Since it appears that Profar will be the starting LF, I am trying to convince myself that he will be a positive contributor in 2022.

1. keeping Profar on one position (LF) may help his overall performance … and based on his career … LF is by far his best defensive position (the only one where he possesses a positive DRS).

2. If we look past last seasons offense and expand to his performance over the past four seasons … he should be an “average” hitter in the 95-100 wRC+ range. Now that does not sound great but when looking at last seasons MLB LF … he would be “middle of the pack” of qualified LF.

3. In recent years, Profar has stayed healthy and should go to post as often as the Padres need him … and that helps stabilize the line-up and considering the alternatives are “questionable” that is valuable.

So, Profar may be an “average” LF (maybe ranked about #15 for qualified) … that may work. I did watch MLB Network’s “Top 10 LF” and it was filled with players that just are always injured … it was actually a pretty depressing list if you value actual playing time.

Profar may not carry the Padres to the playoffs … but he is not likely to cost them the playoffs.

Profar going to end up close to 4 WAR isn't he?...3.1 @ this moment

Would 4 be a decent number?

I thought Jurickson would bust out a 20 HR season( especially the way he started) but looks like he'll most likely end up around 15.

His D is where he's earning his spot this year. Plus, he's not been bad as a leadoff hitter either,

TOTAL upgrade over Pham.

Well 1 WAR is like solid avg MLB player.. 4 WAR is All Star level type...so yeah!

Biggest issue is he aint coming back in 2023..he is going to opt out of his 2/18 remaining and get 4/48 in FA..

Given the lack of Padre OF in 2023 and then the following years (Mazara / Myers FA … Grisham is under preforming) … more than difficult to replace all the OF with quality while pursuing SP. I would not be surprised to see the Padres be proactive and work an extension before (at the end) of the season.

Other grading out as one of the better LF (WAR / dWAR) he seems to be a Preller and team favorite with very engaging personality. As a fan, easy to watch a guy who seems to really be enjoying the game.

Also, think Profar may be very accommodating to remain in the best situation he has been in since he arrived in the ML.

Don't know of you know the back story...but AJP like a father figure to Profar since he was 15yrs old... Profar-s mom asked AJP to look after her boy when they were recruiting/signing him as a young teen..

Interesting to see how the same play gets different views.

Was watching the play and, yes, Profar was slow in fielding and getting ready to make the throw but this is where the next part deviates.

The TV folks clearly said Profar was "challenging" Rojas to take 3B ... and that interpretation got picked up by other media (it is a good take for stirring fans).

I was watching the same play and ... at the time ... my first reaction was Profar was tying to get Kim into the proper cut-off position (he was clearly skewed towards 2B not 3B). That view became the "official" position from Profar / the team.

To be clear ... it was a bad play by Profar ... probably a bad play by Kim ... but the "spin" makes it worse. Actually I blame Mark Grant for starting all this.
