Padres vs Rockies July 11-14
Quote from fenn68 on July 14, 2022, 3:58 amTrying to pull some positives from the last few games:
1. Yes, raw but Ruiz looks like he will be a ML player and clearly provides excitement with his speed … his triple also showed he is not just a slap hitter. Looks like a guy who can provide a lot of doubles / triples. Good chance he remains up even with the pending roster changes.
2. Kim is way under rated by the fans … think he is rated about 9th (WAR) among qualified SS … plus I am getting very confident in his defense. Clearly crushes LHP and his recent ABs are improving as he gets more regular playing time.
3. Abrams … after a slow start and adjustment to the ML … has been putting up some better numbers offensively … and some spectacular defense plays interspersed with some clunkers … but see the upside is close.
Not sure how quickly they will develop but can see their value to a successful Padres’ team in the future years … and may influence priorities of adding via trade / FA and who they choose to keep around.

I am not going to judge Ruiz's power by a couple of games in COL and his output in EP. Our next series is in SD, so lets wait and see what happens there.
Kim, I have always loved his "D", SD's big problem is Tatis. He can make plays at SS that Kim can not; however, he has had some issues with defense, and then tend to come in batches. So, can SD convince a $25M± per season player that he best serves the team playing on the grass?
Abrams, still not sold on the bat, still way too many slappy hits to the INF. Not encouraged by one bomb in COL, needs to show gap power in SD and other parks like LA and SF before I get too excited about his bat turning around. And then, how many SS does SD need??

CJ is the one "stud youth" I would be willing to move in a trade for a "controlled 2-3Yrs +" stud BAT .
Reason..at MLB level we have Tatis/Kim and Crone all SS/2B capable...
In the minors we have Rosario at AAA... Merrill at A.. and Acosta in Arizona..Merrill and Acosta look like soon to be Top 20 prospects in all of baseball..
So SS now and in the next decade looks to be in as good a shape as any in baseball

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 14, 2022, 1:09 pmEven in this pennant race and even after Myers returns I'd like to see Ruiz in the OF most days.Play CF against LH pitchers and maybe platoon with Mazara against RH's
Infield we can only pray that one day becomes Manny/Tatis/Abrams/Cronenworth around the horn with Kim as super utility.
Maybe Kim at 2b if Abrams struggles with the bat.
But,we know Hoz is still gonna play nearly everyday so this won't happen this year either way.
Good problems to have but I agree with "possibly" trading Abrams if the return is enough and makes sense.

It is all about the return … but the Padres have flexibility in the middle INF. Plus don’t discount the shortage in the OF that may be alleviated with adding either Tatis or Abrams to the OF mix (or both).
Padres need to keep productive low cost / controlled players to balance the higher cost players they will need to add to remain competitive.
Actually, if in the trade mode, would opt to move Kim (and I like him) but his trade value as a ML SS (ranked about #9) is probably greater for an established team plus moving his contract would clear more CBT space. Only controlled for a couple more years. Not now but something to consider over the winter.

Quote from fenn68 on July 14, 2022, 1:30 pmLooking to be another COORS’ special … SP will be gone early. Freeland is pushing 70 pitches in the 3rd. Plus we know Snell will not go deep.
The introductory offer on Ruiz is looking tempting … double and steals third … scores on a sac fly.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 14, 2022, 2:41 pmJust got home and turned on the game and feel very fortunate I missed Snells 5k,6bb,99 pitch 3 2/3’s.
Scores tied and I didn’t have to go through that frustration.
So I have that going for me…..which is nice.

Quote from fenn68 on July 14, 2022, 3:37 pmThe essence of a slump … the scoring is up BUT the elite pitching fails. Pitching should rebound but then expect the bats to return to being cold.
I guess I could see Cron and Blackmon hitting but Iglesias … big and in the clutch … not good.

We have like one elite bat in our lineup...most all playoff teams have 2 ..or 3.. LAD have Mookie/Turner/Freeman.... St Louis has Nolan + Goldy... etc etc etc... We been doing to do with Machado... no help.. sure we can win with this team..IF we add 2 more BATS.. assuming one is Tatis and the other Contreras .. we should be a lot better soon... JUST need to play .500 ball or better between now or the deadline or we will have a though time hanging in...
AZ next for 3... Yu/Manea and Clev... I like our chances... 3 to Go and we need them ALL...
