Padres vs Rockies

PreviousPage 5 of 9Next

OK, Tatis and Myers tested positive .... out at least 10 days. Hosmer, Profar, and Mateo on IL due to contact tracing and could return in less than 10 days after completing the protocols proving they are not testing positive.

Padres will add two players today ... could go a lot of ways. Also, can add a 27th man for the second game of the double header. Since Crismatt is up and the pen was not used much in the past few days / off day tomorrow ... with 7 inning games today ... maybe they go with all position players. Going to create a roster problem in EP.

Good day for Darvish and Snell to pitch shutout ball and complete games.

Note that EP has an off day ... so a bit more flexibility on the call-up. EP has only 12 position players left on the roster (including Malone) ... call up two and they need to play with 10 (one likely the back-up catcher). Hopefully they have no injuries or we will see some pitchers in position player roles.

Given the “short” time of the Padres’ COVID situation ... and any player they want to promote to EP has to go through a protocol that includes days of isolation ... likely EP will have to manage there way through.

No one has ever answered so I guess no one knows?

But how are these players not vaccinated?

You have a $340 million dollar asset and instead of just getting him a readily available shot you just “take your chances”?

Makes no damn sense.

Why would you put a way too untested bioengineered product in the young healthy body of your $340M investment? No one has any idea of the long term effects of this new vaccine type.

Wouldn't hold my breath for CG shutouts in Colorado... especially from Snell.  If BB's will do you in, this is the place.

O'Grady as the "10 day" replacement for Myers seems like a no-brainer.  2nd guy & 1 game doubleheader guy a question.

COULD go to Campusano, but he's not going to catch Darvish (or Snell, probably) so I'd prefer hot bat SH versatile Castillo.  Again, like Andreoli, Castillo could be "up/downed" off MLB roster when others return from covid protocols.  Leaves Campusano in AAA to catch Gore tomorrow.

But even that is just a 3-man bench for 2 games (only 7 Innings), when it seems possible could lose another guy/s to the protocols.  Could see Musgrove in LF again!   Doubleheader bonus guy only the 2nd game.  Still think it's an arm, BUT the whole El Paso staff got used heavily (multiple extra inning games, bullpen game on Monday) in their 6 game series, so no one is really truly rested.  Probably someone already on 40-man?

COULD ALSO option Diaz down, just to create a spot for likely a 4th bench position player, but I doubt they do this.  He's been too good & is needed to help support Paddack, Lamet, & Weathers "build up".  Think he stays with Pads.

With Crismatt up as the “extra arm” would seem that in the short run position players are the need for PH / injury coverage.

O’ Grady makes sense as a LHH and legit OF .... Castillo is worth a shot for INF back-up ... the two for Myers / Hosmer ... then the 27th could be a Rivas or Cantu allowing Caratini to catch and Nola to play 2B or 1B. Until Profar - Mateo - Hosmer return going to be a lot of shuffling the parts.

Caratini - Nola - Cronenworth - Kim - Machado - Pham - Grisham - Marcano start?

Nola - Caratini - Cronenworth - Kim - Machado - Pham - Grisham - Marcano?

Andreoli - O’Grady - Castillo - Rivas - just ride the bench until needed?

Can’t see optioning Diaz the way the staff is set up .... first down will be frequent flyer Crismatt ... that I believe resets the staff at 14. That leaves 5 “call-up” position players ... basically the whole bench plus one starting if they choose to align them that way with both Nola and Caratini playing.

The bad part about all this besides the obvious effect on our Padres is where did Tatis and Meyers get this ?

San Francisco ?

Any of the teams that the Padres have played lately...Pirates, Giants and now Rockies are all on the watch list so to speak as well as the teams they are playing.....I would love to think this is an isolated situation but reality may set in with more positive test through out MLB.....I guess we are going to see just how deep or thin our minor league system really is

Wow.  This is like one of those SAT "logic" word problems.   From SDUT:

  • Positive Covid test = Min 10 days out/isolated from team.  2 negative tests required.   Tatis, Myers, (Paddack)
  • UNVACCINATED Close contact = Min 7 days out/isolated.  2 negative tests.  BUT...
  • VACCINATED Close contact = "Can resume play immediately IF not symptomatic"   So any of: Profar, Mateo, & even Hosmer could return to play as soon as today if these conditions true for them.

What we DO Know:

  • Paddack was fully vaccinated but tested positive anyway
  • Myers must also have been fully vaccinated, or he would have been out longer when he was briefly scratched 4/28 as a close contact (presumably of Paddack), but cleared to play the same day.  So he = 2nd vaccinated player to test positive.
  • Majority of Padres team & staff have been vaccinated
  • Myers & Tatis were asymptomatic yesterday

What we DON'T Know:

  • If Tatis was vaccinated.  Doesn't "matter" per se, but if he was, that would be the 3rd positive for a vaxxed player.  It would also make it way more likely he has no or less symptoms & returns sooner.
  • If Hosmer, Profar, &/or Mateo were vaccinated.  We will know soon.  If any of them are still out on F 5/14 it means either:  They weren't vaccinated, OR they were vaxxed, but are showing symptoms, OR MLB &/or Padres have revised their policy-see next.  Remember Mateo had Covid last July, but any immunity/antibodies gained from that likely gone.
  • Here's the big one:  Will what's going on here with Pads cause MLB (&/or individual teams) to revise their "OK to play immediately as vaccinated asymptomatic close contact" policy?  Since at least 2 vaccinated guys have tested positive, it's possible they do.
  • Did Myers in fact contract Covid from the close contact with Paddack?   It's pretty logical to conclude he did.  BUT holding him out 7 days from 4/28 wouldn't have accomplished anything, because he didn't test positive until 5/11 ???  It also seems impossible to determine that Myers DIDN'T get exposed by someone else later.
  • Is there any chance these are False positives?   This happened to Alex Dickerson on SF... last year?

Added: O’Grady; Kivlihan; and Ramirez .... O’Grady is starting in RF.

No Castillo 🙁

Must be because of 40-man roster rules, right?
