Padres vs Rays June 16-18

PreviousPage 2 of 4Next

Snell pumped for his start vs his original team ... impressive first two innings!

Padres are scrabbling in a good way. No hitting going on Padres pull off

Kim bunts for a hit

Grisham bunts for a hit (bit lucky)

Tatis bunts and moves runners to 2nd / 3rd ... 1 out

Soto hits a SF

Four batters on four pitches (I think). Padres lead 1-0.

Even with Snell pitching lights out ... don't think 1 run will hold up.

Although very few (including me) would have had Tatis bunt with 2 on and no out ... that turned out to be the key to the inning setting up both the SF and the Grisham scoring on the error.

Small ball when your not scoring ... turns out smart.

Winning again despite another O’fer with risp.

When will this adversity to hitting when it counts end?

It’s basically the difference between these two teams.

The Padres practically lead MLB in Pitching and defense and have Tatis/Soto/Machado/Bogaerts yet are under .500 while TB has zero superstars and lead MLB in nothing….yet are the best team in baseball.

The difference is when you get your hits.

If it changes for us soon we will catch the leaders of the NL West…..if it doesn’t we will miss the playoffs.

It wasn't a pretty offensive showing, but at this point I'll take a win anyway we can get it especially against the Rays.

Not complaining about a win…..but we’re never going on a 6 game win streak without hitting with risp.

Cant expect a Shutout every time out and offensive luck.

Yeh, historically bad with RISP for a set of “stars” who in the past have been hitting with  RISP. Just impossible the figure how all could implode simultaneously.

I am still optimistic (maybe a little less than before) that once a couple break out the rest will also break out and in the heat of the summer … the entire team will be hot.

Maybe a bit too far out for winning the NL West (unless AZ pitching collapses and the kids slump) but still within easy reach of a WC slot … if they get hot.

Listened to Melvin’s post-game and of those three consecutive bunts he only called one … and the one was not Tatis’. Evaded the question as to the one he did call.

Actually really praised Tatis for his game smarts on the bunt given the struggling offense and thought he was trying for a hit but couldn’t lose even if he only moved the two runners … which he did.

I hope Snell can continue on his current level of dominance … he has in the 2nd half of previous seasons.

In his last 5 starts … 30 innings … only 2 ER on only 14 hits … 45K. That is a Cy Young contender pace. Nice if got some runs behind him.

So that is the good news … the less than good news as a FA after the season and only 30 he is in a position to seek (and get) a really big long term deal. Seidler (who apparently likes Snell) has some tough payroll calls on Snell, Hader, Wacha, Martinez who will require a lot to remain Padres on top of a payroll that is already pretty lofty and will get higher with the arbitration of Soto and the contract jump for Cronenworth.

If Snell (and the others) get us a pennant … worry about that in the winter.

That's the $ 200 million question , why can't Snell do this more often ?
