Padres vs. Rangers

Why is Pomeranz not closing out this game?

Bad outcome but the decision to stick with Strahm (who has been decent out of the pen) after only 7 pitches and a quick 1-2-3 in the 8th against a LHH who never got a hit off him ... was logical.

Pomeranz can’t go every night and someone else has to prove they can get people out or the Padres are not going last very long in the playoff hunt.

Sort of the can’t win scenario with pitchers .... should have left Morejon in because he was pitching effectively but should have pulled Strahm after pitching effectively.

Or...there’s a reason a team chooses one guy to close games out....because he’s your best pitcher.

Pomeranz only threw 18 pitches yesterday.

If Yates was healthy and available he would have been in......same should go for Pomeranz.

Oh...and I absolutely HATE that we just gave up an out to move a runner over one base.

He was already in scoring position.
Now you’ve taken away 1/3 of your chances for a hit to score him just in case you get a fly ball....and that’s just to tie.

We need TWO to win.....don’t give up an out!

Wow.....as soon as he went 3-2 on Manny I thought that was about to happen!

MANNY!

I'm probably overly sour on Manny ... he came through tonight!

And Hill looked GREAT!  A well deserved W!

Bottom of the 10th was textbook!  Great AB's from everyone, including Garcia's SAC which really put pressure on Texas on what they needed to do to pull out the win.  All I wanted was a SF to tie it up and win it in the 11th but got the old salami!  Even though Manny was the hero, got great efforts from many players.  I liked Naylor's AB's even though he only got the one squib hit.  Didn't get anything from Hosmer and Myers today against a very tough righty, but others came through.  Very satisfying win!

The AB that was nails was Tatis with the walk....that was a classic matchup. Very tough pitches that Tatis kept fouling off pitches from Montero who was throwing gas at 97 MPH. The walk sets it up for Machado and he fouls off some very tough pitches before he got one up and middle middle. When he hit that ball you could tell it was gone....just pure barreled up. The only question was where was it going to come down and I think it hit the facing on the second deck or it would have been a "upper tank" shot. Just a flat out bomb.  I felt very happy for Machado because he will never live up to the contract that he signed....hell, nobody can live up to that, so the walk off was just a reminder as to why we signed him. The guy is a great player and we get to watch him in his prime making plays in the field, like that crazy catch in the right field corner he ran down  or just his uncanny ability to make a throw to first base from heading into the third base dugout. Love watching him play....good or bad the guy is a stud.

For one night the town belongs to Manny Machdo, as it should, he came through when it really mattered and I for one am very happy for the kid.

Great win for the Padres and I love the fact that they can hurt you just about anywhere in the batting order. Profar has turned it up and his energy is infectious and he has shown he can hurt you with the bat, Cronenworth is the surprise of the year and has cemented himself on this roster for years to come in my opinion, you have to love the fact that he never seems to be out of place in the field or over matched at the plate, Grisham looks like a guy that is playing like he has years of MLB experience and has played a great Center Field to go along with a very solid batting approach. Hosmer and Meyers are playing like quality veterans that they are and know they don't have to be "the guy", just take solid ABs and do damage. Hedges is still a dead spot but even he runs into one on occasion and he handles the pitching staff great. Tatis is on a different level and Machado is the leader of this very merry collection and they are only going to get better. AJ Preller has done a great job of putting this group together to go with the starting pitching staff, Paddack, Lamet, Richards, Davies and Quantril/Morejon/Bullpen and then you have the bullpen that can be very good or have it's troubles but either way this team is fun to watch and are definitely in the conversation.

This is the most I think I have ever written but sometimes you just have to say what's on your mind and it's been a long time since the Padres have been relevant and it's fun to see....I just wish we could see it in person....the joint would have been jumping tonight for sure.

Go Pads !!!

Fun fact : Padres Pitchers have 8 errors out of 19 for the team in 26 games. What is going on, they can't field or throw to bases. Quantrill didn't make the play in the 10th and the nubber in front of the plate should've been Hills but Hedges probably didn't want to chance it.  Paddock's velocity seemed to be back up to 96 or 97 compared to last starts 92 to 94. The extra day off may have helped.

Hosmer's bat looked a little slow yesterday, so it may be he needs to be rested completely today or used as the DH.   The affects of that recent stomach virus in this heat and humidity is no joke, so got to take care of him.  Cronenworth probably replaces him in the field and several options available for 2b/of if that is the case.  Go Padres!

A 6-man rotation makes utterly no sense in a 60 game season... but in a 162 game season AFTER a 60 game season... when the many top prospect SP's in system have no Minors season to stretch out their arms/IP in game settings...  very under-discussed issue/possibility for next year.

I've always felt that the increase in effectiveness / more Pitches that game of the #1 - #5  SP by getting the extra rest day might cumulatively make going with a 6-man rotation next year (when no one is really set up from this year to suddenly jump to 200+ IP).  It really suits the Pads "Tommy John crew #1-#3", and lots of young on the cusp arms roster almost perfectly.  MANY ways to go at it I've posted before; big one being the #1 can go every 5th day if you've got a real stud, which Lamet is increasingly looking to be.  Can always "flip"to #2 going normal rest with Lamet getting an extra day if needed.... etc.

Will need a LOT of SP's to get through 162 games next year given how the 2020 season is (not) playing out at all levels.
