Padres vs Phillies May 17-19
Quote from LynchMob on May 19, 2022, 7:02 amQuote from BoosterSD on May 18, 2022, 10:22 amWell, SD has a 126 games left in the regular season, so that is 1,130± innings to cover between starters and bull pens. Then consider, Gore has not pitched more than 50 innings in a season since 2019. Clevinger is coming off TJ surgery #2, and Snell has only averaged 113 innings a season. Plus Martinez, looks like he is only good for twice through a line up.
So IMO, a piggyback situation for the balance of the season makes perfect sense. If both Snell and Clevinger stay healthy and make all their starts to the end of the season, and go 5 innings each game, that is 126 innings each.
Keep going with the math ... 126 IPs for Snell + Clev ... 75 IPs for Gore + Martinez ... 150 IPs for Yu + Joe + Sean ... so that's 850 ... so 1130 - 850 = 280 IPs between 6 RPs ... do I have that right? That seems like less than 50 IPs needed from the 6 RPs ...

Quote from WindsorUK on May 19, 2022, 8:52 amAgain, not wanting to beat a dead horse but....your STARTERS are your best pitchers.
If the front 7 are throwing that many innings, it leaves very little for our bullpen( read: lesser) arms.
I'm all for it!

Mathematically that sounds good ... just not all that sure that is the best mix for winning.
- Gore and Martinez are performing as better relief options than the last of the other 6 RP options. Then only using them 3 innings every 5th day does not maximize their value. Note that the Padres don't want to make either of them pure RP in the mix but should be open to using them at least more often. Additionally, if anything happens to one of the 5 SP may want Gore or Martinez ready for a bigger work load.
- Of the other 6 RP ... not all are created equal ... Rogers at a minimum is going to be worked a lot and the better ones will get the pressure roles followed by the bottom rung being relegated to mop up / as needed roles (and limited innings).
So basically a bit more work should be planned for Gore, Martinez, Rogers and maybe less for the least productive back end of the pen. Keeping in mind that a long way to go and altering that plan should be a given base on injury and performances.

Quote from MrPadre19 on May 19, 2022, 10:05 amEven though we are without Tatis,it seems like with the Phil’s missing Harper it would be a disappointment if we don’t take this rubber game.
Of course you never want to lose a series…but this is a good team and we are on the road.
Put another way…I will be a lot happier if we win today than I would be dis heartened if we lost.
That being said, let’s hope Yu dominates and ………….
Lets Go Padres!

Quote from MrPadre19 on May 19, 2022, 1:40 pmThat was a Big win!
Rogers walked Camargo just to add to the drama.😉
I only wish our offense would take control of some games to give Rogers a break…..he will most definitely not be available tomorrow against SF if needed.
A win is a win but we need some runs…..

Quote from 3fingersplit on May 19, 2022, 10:43 pmOne of the pitchers nobody seems to be talking about is Taylor Rogers....he has been lights out and leads all of MLB in saves so far this season. I know the Padres have some questions to answer regarding upcoming free agents on this staff but it seems to me that a MAJOR keep would be Rogers.....Closers are so vital to a teams playoff chances.....I for one hope that AJ is able to get him signed to an extension and the fact of the matter is Peter Seidler can write a check and not even blink at the luxury tax.....if he and AJ had the same mindset....Pay the man and lets get a World Series Title in San Diego.....the even bigger get by stroking a check....Juan Soto.....wouldn't that just set the baseball world on it's head
On to San Francisco......Go Pads!!!

So Soto will be a FA in the winter after the 2024 season, and is represented by Boras. Obviously this would be a huge check, and I agree, Seidler can write it without blinking.
So let me ask you a question 3finger, since you have been against the 3/4 to 1 player trades in the past. Would you wait to get Soto until FA? Or, with the pitchers that we have know, and the need for OFers after this season, would you bite the bullet now to get Soto? It would probably cost Abrams, Campusano, Weathers, and maybe one other MiL.
Could you imagine R-L-R-L punch of Tatis, Soto, Machado, and Crone!

Quote from fenn68 on May 20, 2022, 9:07 amTaking the negative side on Rogers and Soto long term.
1. After 2022 and what is starting out a career season, Rodgers will be demanding a longer term / big money contract. He is already 31 and prior to this year only had one quality season as a closer. Plus closers are a fickle group … many here wanted to extend Hand, Yates, Melancon after excellent closing seasons … Padres did not … they struggled in their new homes … Padres found a more cost efficient replacements. Plus the way the Padres are working Rogers … hopefully he last through this season but could well be spent for 2023.
2. Soto (not going to happen). A trade NOW maximizes his value to the Padres since they are built to win in 2022-23 and beginning in 2024 the pitching staff is gone (except for Gore and some prospects). To get him now it will cost at least three of their top prospects taking away future reinforcements (or future trade chips). So, likely in 2024 Machado - Tatis - Soto (combined over $90MM) and the rest of the roster fit for a second division finish. Instead of Soto in 2023-24 … better option is to secure a combo of Musgrove - Manaea - Clevinger (each should command a high teens to mid-20s AAV) and focus on lesser FA adds while betting on Abrams - Hassell - Campusano for offense at league minimum. Aside … assuming Soto remains a healthy elite hitter into his FA and with Boras his agent … by 2024 the demand will probably be at least a $40MM AAV and 14-15 year deal (all down side to the team).
I am still pro a quality 26 man roster over a roster of 3 super stars (if they continue to deliver) and 23 fillers.

Abrams, need to see more time in AAA before I make a educated assessment on his bat, and he is still young, so hope for the best.
Hassell, I am still excited about.
Campusano, I think he is going to be a 4A player. His time in the MLs so far, is ugly. Yes, he is mashing AAA again, but we have seen many in our farm system do great in the MiLs, just to not be able to make the last adjustment to the MLs. I would trade Campusano right now for the right OFer.

SD Booster....I really hate multi player trades for one guy for the most part because most guys don't really move the needle or are short term rentals to a degree.....BUT....Soto is a different breed of cat and given the fact that the Padres seem to have a pitching staff that is at the top or close to it in all MLB in my opinion...this could be a case of strike while the iron is hot.....still some question marks in the middle relief but starters and having Rogers to close out games makes it possible...not probable to deal for Soto with this window of opportunity to win a World Series open for a few years.
Some big if's.....could the Padres put together a trade that could get Soto without trading the future of this team away ?
Would the players you mentioned be enough ?
I hate the idea of trading young pitching (Weathers) and the only real catcher in the system ( Campusano) and a player that could play infield but also could play outfield with speed ( Abrams) and speed to the one thing you can't really teach....you can improve running technique but speed is a god given asset and Abrams has that....will he ever be able to hit MLB pitching or are Campusano and him going to be 4A types of players?....I don't want us to have to sign a Jake Arrietta type pitcher again in the future....somebody that had very little left in the tank
Soto is under contract through 2024 and if the Padres were able to buy out his remaining years and extend him for say another 2 to 3 years until 2026 0r 2027 then I could see a move like that being made....Peter Seidler is from the O'Malley family tree and would love to add to the family legacy of World Series Champions.....Brooklyn, Los Angeles and soon to be San Diego.
Grisham-Tatis-Soto-Machado-Cronenworth-Myers- Hosmer-Nola-Cano......Damn....one could only hope
