Padres vs Nats Game Thread

I disagree.

I'm fairly certain they approach payroll on a year to year basis and that $13 is spent and gone and will have no influence on coming seasons.

In fact I think they felt it would be worse, perception wise with both the league and the fans, if they "didn't" spend it.

Fans like us on this board understand the phase we are in and would have been just fine with a $40 mil payroll.....but casual fans would have seen that as "not trying to win" and "being cheap and greedy" etc.

I think they thought taking a flyer on Mitchell while at the same time bringing back a familiar fan favorite who they "thought" could still play AND spending the $13 mil was a good idea at the time.

Wasn't this deal done before we signed Hosmer?

So what would payroll have been had we not made this deal and if Hosmer had signed with KC?

This is sort of "it depends" on spending on payroll in year 1 impact spending on payroll in year B. In the Padres case now ... should be zero impact. After spending the $13MM on Headley and signing Hosmer, they could well be under their baseline budget for payroll in 2018 ... they are still under $100MM and all the suggestions from earlier years and earlier this year they COULD go over $100MM if needed.

Then consider for 2019 ... Headley and Galvis' salaries are gone and so is about $11MM of salary still owed on Shields ... basically dropping the payroll by about $30MM to somewhere in the mid-60s. They could sign Ross for $15MM/year and still have their payroll go down. From what I looked at months ago ... should be no payroll issue for years (barring some major FA signing in the next few year) ... the in house guys are not due for any big money (if they deserve it) for some time (around Arb 3).

Do agree that the Padres do need to create a legit spending level ... not only for the average fan but to keep league and union relations positive.

Different from the current Padres situation ... IF a team extended over budget in Year A ... tapping the cash reserve in bank .... they MAY need to go under budget in year B to rebuild the cash reserve in bank. It really depends on any teams total financials and how all the parts move across years. A lot of moving parts from year to year and none are immune for the impact of the other.

No way in the world I give Tyson Ross 15 million dollars. I know that's not what you're necessarily advocating FENN, but there is plenty of room to add payroll I think for the right pieces. More important to get that element right. I would love to see a bat brought in to alleviate pressure on Hosmer, who has had nobody hitting behind him most of the season (Looking at you, Pirela)

Yeh, my post was that there is (and will be) a lot of payroll flexibility for quite a few years.

Now that does not make me want to see the Padres spend the money (at least big money) on less then optimum adds just to say they spent. However, looking at the FA list for next winter and after Machado and Harper (both way out of the contract level the Padres should even consider .... over 10 years / over $300MM would be a long term death knell for a small market team) there really is not a ton of great options ... almost all over 31 at that point and few with appealing current resumes. Likely the Padres follow the recent pattern and sign a couple on 1 year / low cost deals just to continue the bridge to the prospects ... just not other great options for long term deals. With that strategy, expect a ton of criticism as their payroll drops to the $70MM range.

Maybe their is a better FA crop (or at least FA that fit the Padres needs) in the 2019-20 FA season. More hopefully is that the critical mass of prospects develop to create a contender for 6 or more years and there is no need to sign major FA ... hopefully!

I expect a major trade within 12 months to shake things up in lieu of a free agency binge. Could really add some impact talent with the amount of sheer prospect depth the Padres could deal from.
