Very impressed by CJ Abrams at last nights game.  When he was drafted #6 overall by the Padres in 2019, I thought it still was a steal to get him at that slot.  He started his major career slowly but this year has improved both offensively and defensively.  If he continues to play at the level I saw last night, I can see him as an All Star for many years to come.

Had he remained with San Diego, he likely would have been shifted to CF because we still had Tatis at SS and then Kim or Cronenworth in reserve when the trade was made.  Until this year, he would not have beaten out either Kim or Cronenworth defensively at SS.  So while we can lament this part of the Soto trade, lets see how Merrill compares to him offensively over the next couple of years and look at this part of the trade from that perspective.  This trade looks worse than it really is because Soto was such a divisive part of the 23 season and did absolutely nothing when we really needed him in the early part of the year when Tatis was finishing out his suspension.  We expect to see a much improved Gore  tonight but at the time of the trade he definitely was going backwards and it took several years for him to get back to being a decent pitcher who may be on the rise.

I look at it moving forward…if Abrams was still here then would Merrill even be playing here in San Diego this year…from a comparison between Abrams and Merrill in year one…Merrill blows Abrams away in my own honest opinion and it’s bad enough that we gave up way to much for Soto and Josh Bell…Abrams, Gore, Woods, Hassell III, Voit and Susanna and I’m just happy that AJ didn’t succumb to the wants that so many teams insisted on and that is Jackson Merrill. I know it’s only been one half of one season for Merrill and he may very well regress and have a “Sophomore “ slump next year but I would seriously be looking to lock Merrill up long term…sooner than later…he is only going to get better and fill out his frame. I for one am looking forward to him becoming a cornerstone of this franchise. What will he cost down the road when he adds Rookie of the Year to his baseball card?

I might be wrong, but I think It was a curveball that got away and It barely hit him in the foot, now Shildt was awesome in that situation, on purpose ir not he lighted the fire for sure
