Padres vs Guardians June 13-15
Quote from WindsorUK on June 14, 2023, 3:33 pmYeah, the right left thing is bollocks! We have too many good hitters( and guys that defy the splits!) to play that game.
Seems like Preller and his analytics geeks are trying to force square pegs into round holes.
Tatis, Bogaerts, Machado, Soto looks alright to me....and probably has the opposition shaking in their boots.

No, not complaining … he has been OK for a#5 SP with (by my account) 5 good starts and 3 not so good starts. However an innings issue with Lugo … as with Martinez … so we may see at some point a flip of roles for load management to get them both to the stretch run without burnout. Neither appear to be in the same category as the #1-4 for the Padres.

Quote from fenn68 on June 14, 2023, 5:11 pmPadres are flipping Weathers (to go tomorrow v Guardians) and Darvish (to go Friday vs Rays).
I guess a better chance to win both games with the better pitcher vs the better team … plus Darvish gets the extra day rest.
Weathers could be bad vs either team so a push there … but if bad vs Guardians (and they need to tax the pen) a good chance Darvish gives innings to rest the pen for SAT and SUN. Flip that and using the pen on FRI could hurt them for SAT and SUN. Alternatively if Weathers in good … he is also pretty rested and could go deep into the game … helping everyone. Remember Cleveland is not a great offensive team.
Maybe under the radar is using Weathers on THUR and sending him down and recalling Crismatt as he completes his maximum rehab might help the staff over the weekend. If Crismatt not added he gets DFA since no options remain.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on June 14, 2023, 9:38 pm5-0 W.. Tatis OH WHAT A NIGHT... I think Cruz needs to DH "most of the time" his Power still "elite" ..Carp just warning track power in April-June.. maybe barely HR power in July/August..
Gary Sanchez on a rare off night at the plate..still reached base on a BB and threw out the only guy who tried to steal on him.. and lowered his already low C ERA..with a 0.00 tonight..
Awesome Series Win.. we tried for the Sweep tomorrow!

Quote from Jeremy Hill on June 14, 2023, 11:09 pmFor all the different opinions on optimal lineup construction, tonight's game was a good reminder of something Melvin was preaching back in spring training. When they're all going good there's really no wrong way to line the big 4 up. It seems like it's finally coming together. Win tomorrow and we're back to .500

Quote from fenn68 on June 15, 2023, 2:34 amGood game yesterday with the power showing up and some plus defense out of Grisham and Tatis.
We need to be giving Wacha more recognition for his stellar work. In 2023, 13 starts, 7-2 record with an impressive 2.89 ERA (less since May 1).
Hard to figure the talent evaluators and their view of Wacha over the winter coming off a 11-2 (23 start) season with Boston and a 3.36 ERA. Collectively they did not rate him very favorably and he lasted a long time in FA … allowing the Padres to get him at a bargain $7.5MM. Considering what Manaea and Clevinger signed for … a real steal.
Maybe the analytics on Wacha showed his peripherals in question … maybe his 2019 - 21 were not impressive … but 2022 and his early career did suggest that he was effective when his command was on … that should have generated much more interest in a league that need SP. Too much reliance on peripheral measures and not enough on results. Worked out well for the Padres.
Barring a total meltdown … Padres would seem likely to exercise their club option on Wacha (2 years / $32MM … $16MM AAV).

Quote from fenn68 on June 15, 2023, 2:50 amBig game tonight for Weathers and the Padres. A good (long) outing from Weathers will keep the pen rested for the challenge of the weekend vs TB. Plus a win gets them to .500 a critical psychological barrier.
Cleveland is throwing a pretty good rookie LHP (Allen) which should get Kim and Cruz in the line-up. Hopefully Cleveland’s offensive struggles continue.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on June 15, 2023, 8:24 amLol I kept thinking this was the Logan Allen we traded... it's a different guy.. 😆 🤣
BTW Morejon has looked very good at El Paso.. I dont see Cristmatt back at all... But with lots of injuries throughout baseball could see Nabil traded for a lotto ticket somewhere in the DSL or ACL..or maybe a fringy "blocked" prospect in AA or AAA..

That would be my guess ... he should have "some" trade value given salary / control with some ML success in the past. A lot of teams need upgrades in their terrible pens. Agree a lotto ticket in the low minors seems right.
However, Padres may play the "make no move until they have to" card IF Weathers or Carlton struggle today they can be optioned ... Crismatt may be added as a fresh arm for the weekend+ ... then DFA when Lugo is activated (or kept if another injury).
Crismatt was useful last season in various roles and if Weathers / Carlton are not substantially better NOW ... why not keep them all on the 40 man for insurance for future injuries ... plus as pitchers on other teams start to get injured closer to the deadline ... maybe Crismatt's trade value rises or he sticks and someone like Garcia (FA to be) is traded (maybe for a better return)
I guess it may boil down to Weathers / Carlton sticking or being optioned determining the fate of Crismatt today.
