The 3 game set with Cleveland should be challenge for either team to score any runs base on how both are playing and the impact of playing at PETCO. Consider:

Pitching:

6th in MLB ERA: 3.73 … Guardians

8th in MLB ERA: 3.77 … Padres

Hitting:

23rd in MLB OPS: .708 … Padres

27th in MLB OPS: .675 … Guardians

So, two teams that can really pitch … two teams that cannot hit … in a pitcher friendly ballpark. Should be quick low scoring games (which usually ends up being slugfests … that’s baseball).

Cruz activated ... Rivas optioned.

6-3 Padres Win... Pitching was great.. defense a bit shacky.. Offense set the tone early and often and chased Bibbie ..

Sanchez with the big blast..

Keep it going boyz!

Let's get 2 in a row!

I really think if this group can put together an 8 to 10 game win streak this month, that would catapult them close to the top, before the break, leaving them in a great position to start picking off anyone ahead of us come July, August and September.

But they definitely need a signature run at some point, and soon. Lurking just under .500 is no place to be heading into the break.

Hopefully BoMel leaves FTJ  at the top of the order. Still boggles the mind why Soto is at 2. Just swap he and Bogaerts( Manny ain't movin' off the 3). Sanchez is shaping up as a good 5 hole hitter as well.

Is there any way to find out Grisham's numbers batting 9th with FTJ batting 1? I'd be surprised if they're not better than Grish's overall numbers.

Still looking for all of the main bats to get hot at the same time.

Tatis is read hot and over the recent run Bogaerts and Machado have improved (not their standards but at least to a more acceptable level). However, after a hot streak ... Soto has gone ice cold while Cronenworth still is below average. Sanchez still is getting the big hits (and that is really good) but beginning to see a slide in his overall output ... BA/OBP. Kim was hot and is now cold (except getting BB).

Did notice Soto is delivering a higher BA but his BB rate is way down and power is missing. Other than that short spurt around the 5 hit game ... he as ceased to be a contributor. Agree that getting out of the 2nd slot is the right move given the obvious lack of productivity. At some point the "theory" of batting your best hitter (Soto) 2nd has to be viewed as not working and hurting the team ... add that Soto would prefer 3rd or 4th. Hard to guess where in the Padres hierarchy the insistence of batting 2nd resides (and followed). I still don't believe it is all Melvin who seems more pragmatic towards putting a winning line-up on the field.

Still Padres are only 2 games in the loss column out of the last playoff slot ... the summer will get the Padres bats to heat up and they will vault into the playoffs ... would not put the #1 Wild Card slot out reach at this point.

On the positive side ... over the past 15 days ... the SP has been elite and if where not for the offense Padres should have won 9-10 of the last 12 games. Consider:

0.47 ERA ... Snell (3 starts / 19 innings)

1.69 ERA ... Wacha (2 starts / 10.2 innings)

2.12 ERA ... Musgrove (3 starts / 17 innings)

2.92 ERA ... Darvish (2 starts / 12.1 innings)

That a pretty dominate top 4 and unusual to get all four producing at those levels at the same time.

Weak link is Weathers with a 9.64 ERA (2 starts / 4.2 innings) ... but sounds as though Lugo will be returning soon and although he was not super effective before the injury, he was better than the current version of Weathers. If Lugo struggles on his return ... could see him to the pen and the return of Martinez to a starting role. While trying to rebound to the playoffs ... can't risk going with Weathers hoping for development and really don't see a proven upgrade coming out of the minors.

I thought Lugo pitched quite well thus far.  I know that he had one horror start, but apart from that, I don’t think we can complain about him

I too would prefer to see Bogaerts hit in the 2 hole...he has shown the ability to shoot the ball to right field and even with opposite field power...it could open up a part of the game that the Padres don't do and that is the Hit and Run with Nando...keep Manny in the 3 hole with Soto hitting 4...here is a batting order I would love to see at some point for more than a day and I don't really care about the whole left right thing as pitchers still have to face whoever steps in the box and hitters still need to swing regardless if the Pitcher is right or left handed

Tatis

Bogaerts

Machado

Soto

Sanchez

Cronenworth

Kim

Nola

Grisham

If Sanchez is catching then Carpenter or Cruz after Cronenworth.

Just a thought and could it really hurt to try ?

I would also consider Odor for the DH role when Sanchez is catching given the struggles of Carpenter and Cruz. I guess a mix and match game until one step up and grabs the role. Or until Preller digs up someone more productive than any of the three.

Side: not a big thing but would go with Soto at 3 and Machado at 4 getting that LHH tucked up in the 1st inning and creating a bit more separation from the LHH Cronenworth. Plus IF Soto rebounds to his previous success … he is the best hitter of the group and will either be driving in runs (Tatis / Bogaerts) or getting on base for Machado / Sanchez.
