Padres vs Giants April 11-13

PreviousPage 2 of 3Next

Bullpen made the game exciting but well played overall.

Why no Lamet?

Dodged a lot of bullets but so did San Francisco.  Gutty performance by Martinez, the kind of fighting spirit you want from all of your pitchers and if he is our worst starter, then we're going to be in a lot better shape than last year.  Got through 5 and over 80 pitches and kept us in the game.

Hosmer continues to surprise by his all around game and Profar was in the middle of everything by beating out that little nubber and making that fantastic catch on the warning track running way to his left and deep to haul it down.  If only we had a little better situational hitting, we could have blown the game open, however, that certainly could be said about the Giants also.

Darvish tomorrow and hope he bounces back from that 6 inning stint in Arizona without any problems - Giants likely to throw out the same line-up as against Martinez.

My guess is they are trying to limit his innings as much as possible to start the season so he will be available late in the year.

Plus he’s been getting up and getting ready but not getting in the game….those pitches count some considering his Lack of being stretched out the last couple seasons.

Maybe they do want to limit innings but his lack of game work seems a bit extreme … even if is only 5 games. Has to be frustrating for Lamet and has to difficult for him to keep “game sharp” … for a pitcher who during ST was being discussed as a possible closer option.

I guess it is possible that Padres are not seeing the Lamet we want in the side sessions … maybe command is way off … maybe his pitches are not sharp … maybe they are working on some modifications to his delivery / pitches. Any of those would keep him out of close games.

Probably over reacting after five games but either when Garcia returns or on the May 1 cutback … could we see Lamet optioned to the minors to get some game work on a more regular basis? When (if) Lamet starts being used in critical situations by the Padres … he needs to be on top of his game … the minors may help.

Liked what I saw with Martinez … really seemed to know how to pitch and had good command. Kind of pitcher that may just frustrate hitters.

Agree that if he remains effective as the league adjusts to him … sitting in the #5 slot will be a big factor in making the playoffs. Padres would have an advantage vs. other teams’ #5 … more wins … more wins gets them to the playoffs.

Will his performance (and the performance of the other starters) allow the Padres give Clevinger more time to return to full health? Then return and maybe become the Snell / Clevinger piggyback?

Although Lamet has gotten into only 1 game and faced only 1 batter, I believe he got up a total of 3 times to warm up in those 5 games, including back to back days.  That may be why he was "unavailable".  We have to trust in Niebla and Melvin to know how to get the best out of pitching staff and so far it has been good.  We'll know about their pitcher philosophies as we head into May and June - it's a long season but it seems we're much better prepared for it this year than last year.

Well the second trip through the rotation is off to a decidedly less awesome start.

I really hope this performance is just weather related. Hopefully our bats can get going.

Well that sucked. Tomorrow's a new day. Hopefully Adams is ok.
