Quote from Jeremy Hill on April 11, 2022, 2:23 pmI miss having game threads. I'll try to remember to start them this year. I'm trying to figure out a better format. I'm curious to see what the lineup looks like tonight. If it's really going to be a platoon between Hosmer and Voit it seems like yesterday's lineup could be a template.

Quote from 3fingersplit on April 11, 2022, 4:56 pmThank you Jeremy....I was just about to start a series thread so we all could stay in the moment so to speak and lo and behold you had the same idea....right on !
So tonight is Nick Martinez vs Alex Wood.....I like this one for the Padres and if they can string together some hits I see a win. Defense has been better than good and the SP has been better than good....I like the way Bob Melvin seems to be handling the game ( other than the opener vs Arizona...9th inning) but he has a feel for the situation and it's a refreshing change from Andy Green and Jayce Tingler.....Green was not good and Tingler will be a good manager some day....he just needed more time in the dugout at the Major League level before being the Manager.
The spacing of the LHH....1-Grisham, 4- Cronenworth and 7- Hosmer is a nice balance and having Kim hit 9th could pay off big time....he is playing with a lot of energy and looks so much more comfortable this year and at SS.....other teams should be so lucky to have that type of glove as the backup.
I should know later this evening if I'll be in San Francisco to catch the game on Wednesday but tonight is a win 🙂
Go Pads !!!

Quote from Jeremy Hill on April 11, 2022, 5:52 pmI have high hopes for Kim. He seems to have really good command of the strike zone and works good ABs. I think there's a world where he hits 15-20 HRs and steals 15-20 bases with a good OBP given enough ABs once he fully adjusts.

Quote from Randy Manese on April 11, 2022, 6:11 pmI think we saw flashes of what Kim could do last year, but it was a very difficult year for him. However, he had 7 years of experience in Korea and had stats that indicated he could be an average shortstop/2nd baseman. He was really was brought in as insurance for Croney, who spiraled down during the latter half of the 2020 season, but when everyone was healthy in 2021 there were simply no ABs for him to gain any consistency.
With the DH, it seems Kim is going to play a pivotal role to keep all our starters sharp since he can play all 3 infield positions well. Apparently, he worked very hard in the off-season to show that he can be more than a bench player and it seems to be paying off.

Quote from Randy Manese on April 11, 2022, 6:28 pmHoping that Martinez can give us 5 effective innings. Wood can be tough and doesn't give up many walks, so we're going to have to hunt some good pitches to hit and not get behind in the count by being too passive. We'll see if Hosmer and Profar can continue to do well and I'd really like a break-out night by Myers.
After Martinez, could see Lamet who has been up and down getting ready to pitch but only thrown to one batter. Ideally, Martinez gives us a strong 5, Lamet for 2, then we bridge one other relief pitcher to Rogers for the save. Yaz and Belt always seem to give us trouble, so I hope we can keep them in check tonight.
