Padres vs Dodgers September 9-11

Stammen is back. Crismatt was sent down and Scott was DFA'D.

I wonder what the logic was for making Crismatt the odd man out? Maybe because he did have minor league options and maybe gets a break to rest up a bit from a long season. Not sure who would have been the alternative to be optioned or DFA’d off the 14 pitchers on the active roster.

Scott DFA off the 40 is no surprise.

He's thrown a lot of innings out of the pen and hasn't been as effective lately as he was earlier in the year. With the rest of our bullpen guys pitching well and him having options remaining it was the best option. Hader, Garcia, Suarez, Martinez, Morejon, Wilson, Hill, Johnson and Stammen is a really good bullpen.

Sending Crismatt down had to be for some rest and maybe a few mechanical tweeks

he has been solid all year in whatever role he has been asked to fill….I would expect him back sooner than later

Jake with a bomb….would be great to see him heat up the last couple weeks of the season ⚾️

well hell.....11-2 dodgers so that sucks...the brewers already won and the Phillies are down by one to the Nats....2 game lead when the day is over....ouch

Well….that sucked.

We need to start winning series again.

Suddenly, going .500 the rest of the way may not be good enough.

Unless we make it deep into the playoffs, this is why I will say that Melvin has been a failure so far this season.

  1. We have played 19 different teams this season, and we have a winning record against 12 of them. Of the 7 teams we have a losing record against, 2 of those opponents are unacceptable to have a losing record against, COL and DET. There is no excuse for this, that is 3 games right there that we should be higher in the playoff race.
  2. Too many underperforming players this season. Started with Voit and Snell, and continues now with Soto and Bell. Preller has given this manager better players than any manager since 1998, and he is doing nothing with them.
  3. Play against the LAD. Even if we would have gone .500 against them, along with the 3 other games from comment 1. we would be at 84-57 and fighting for the top WC spot, instead of fight for our playoff lives. And finally, and most importantly, all SD fans hate the Duds. He needs to do something to take the bad taste of playing the Duds this season, out of our mouths.

Counter argument is:

I don't believe Melvin has anything to do with Sotos' poor performance since arriving....Voit is what he is and is the same player in Wash as he was with us.Snell's inconsistencies have been well documented long before Melvin had him.

As far as the dodgers they have beat everyone this way.Yes they have our number in particular and it hurts even worse but they are just heads and tails better than everyone else.Blaming Melvin for our record against the dodgers would be the same as giving Dave Roberts the "credit" for their record against us and I don't think anyone thinks he's the reason for all of their success?

Try not to get obsessed on losing to the LAD being the end of life as we know it. Sure, don’t want that to happened but getting into the playoffs … going deep in the playoffs … maybe avoiding LAD / maybe beating LAD in a short series) is a more constructive way of thinking.

Reality is that LAD is the best team (by far) in MLB … 6.5 games ahead of the next best (Houston) and most telling a +310 run differential with the 2nd team at +206 (NYY) and 3rd at +174 (HOU). Basically LAD are 50% better than the next level. That is an enormous difference after 5/6th of the season.

Actually it is sort of a surprise that the Padres have done so well with the Tatis saga, below expectations from the catchers, Voit, Hosmer, Cronenworth, Myers … only Machado and Kim are up for the offense from a season perspective. Then add the expectations from adding Soto, Bell, and Drury … and get instant failure from them meeting their 2022 stats before the deals and that lingers.

Actually excluding the LAD games … Padres winning percentage would be 7th in MLB … considering the under performance of the offense … over achieving.
