Anyone have any insight on why Hedges seems to get hit it the glove or helmet on backswings so often?

This one wasnt on the back swing, it was on the forward swing which is why it was Catchers Interference. What I could tell from the replay, it was a later than normal swing and good catchers reach forward at the last second to grab pitches to make them look better to the plate umpire. So with that action and the late swing, that is why his glove got hit.

As far as getting hit on the back swing, that is a combination of hitters being as far back in the box as they can be, and good catchers will sneak up as close as they can to the plate. That combination can lead to hitting the catcher when a batter takes an awkward swing at a pitch and has a abnormal follow through on that swing.

Thanks. I understand the interference call. I was referring to the contact in the backswings on the Baez Homer. Seen that kind of thing a lot with Hedges this year. Not on hr, but just backswings in general.

Its the combo of the catchers creeping forward and the batters so far back in the box. And more and more guys are going to the release of the top hand after contact which extends/elongates the back swing which makes it easier to make contact with the catcher at that time.

Catchers all around the league are getting hit more on the backswing .... thanks to the combo of "launch angle" and the one hand release at the top of swings. Catchers are positioned basically where they have been for years. Not sure what can be done as that approach from hitters proliferates.

Want to see more of Reyes ... yeh no defense (but same goes for Renfroe). Reyes will still just be 23 next opening day ... Renfroe will be 28 ... so more upside development time. What I liked is his swing which seems more compact / controlled than Renfroe's yet generates a lot of power from that very large body.

I guess I agree, but I will say Renfroe has been having better quality at bats of late.  Still plays the game with his head up his....er, back pocket. Off season trade fodder for sure. Maybe able to carve a career as a lefty masher a la Johnny Gomes.
